Playwrights And Acting written by James Mcteague and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-12-30 with Performing Arts categories.

This book analyzes the acting aesthetic of Brecht, Ionesco, Pinter, and Shepard and presents a detailed methodological approach to the performance of their plays. The originality of the book lies in the systematic and critical analysis of both the process of preparing a role and the shifting assumptions on matters essential for a coherent acting methodology for each playwright. The book is distinctive in that it focuses almost exclusively on the playwrights' published remarks concerning theatre and acting, supplemented with observations by actors and directors who were close collaborators with the playwrights on productions. The analysis begins with a chapter that examines and questions the applicability of the Stanislavsky system that still dominates the post-World War II theatrical scene. The following four chapters are devoted to the playwrights' construction of a coherent view of theatre and acting. An approach to acting is critically examined from the standpoint of the function, means and manner in which the role is realized with regard to the relationship of the actor to self, to the text, to the character and other characters, to the director, and to the audience. At the end of each chapter, a summary of the essential elements for an approach to the role is offered, accompanied by a proposed acting methodology. In the conclusion, an analysis is presented that recognizes what may be applied through Stanislavskian methods and the divergences which demand particularized responses to the plays of Brecht, Ionesco, Pinter, and Shepard.

Nick Enright (1950-2003) was one of Australia’s most significant and successful playwrights. As a writer, director, actor and teacher he influenced theatre in Australia for thirty years. Enright wrote more than fifty plays for the stage, film, television and radio, translated and adapted more, and taught acting to students in varied settings, both in Australia and the United States. His writing repertoire included comedy, social realism, farce, fantasy and the musical. In addition to his prodigious contribution to all of these genres, he was a passionate advocate for the actor and the theatre in contemporary society. In this volume Anne Pender and Susan Lever present a set of essays and recollections about Nick Enright’s work for students, teachers and scholars. The book offers a comprehensive study of Enright’s writing for theatre, film and television. Scholars, acting teachers and theatre directors have contributed to this work each illuminating an aspect of Enright’s remarkable career. The discussions cover interpretations of Enright’s scripts and productions, detailed analysis of his directing style, substantial background and analysis of his writing for musicals, as well as accounts of his specific approach to acting and to adaptation across genres. The essays and recollections included in this book will inspire theatre practitioners as well as scholars. Most importantly, this book will inform and enlighten students and teachers both at high school and university about an exceptional career in the theatre.

"Renaissance Acting Companies and their Plays explores the intimate and dynamic relationship between acting companies and playwrights in this seminal era in English theatre history. Siobhan Keenan's analysis includes chapters on the traditions and workings of contemporary acting companies, playwriting practices, stages and staging, audiences and patrons, each illustrated with detailed case studies of individual acting companies and their plays, including troupes such as Lady Elizabeth's players, 'Beeston's Boys' and the King's Men and works by Shakespeare, Jonson, Middleton, Brome and Heywood. We are accustomed to focusing on individual playwrights: Renaissance Acting Companies and their Plays makes the case that we also need to think about the companies for which dramatists wrote and with whose members they collaborated, if we wish to better understand the dramas of the English Renaissance stage"--

Words For The Theatre written by David Cole and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-29 with Drama categories.

In Words for the Theatre, playwright David Cole pursues a course of dramaturgical self-questioning on the part of a playwright, centred on the act of playwriting. The book’s four essays each offer a dramaturgical perspective on a different aspect of the playwright’s practice: How does the playwright juggle the transcriptive and prescriptive aspects of their activity? Does the ultimate performance of a playtext in fact represent something to which all writing aspires? Does the playwright’s process of withdrawing to create their text echo a similar process in the theatre more widely? Finally, how can the playwright counter theatre’s pervasive leaning towards the ‘mistake’ of realism? Suited to playwrights, teachers, and higher-level students, this volume of essays offers reflections on the questions that confront every playwright, from an author well-versed in supplying words for the theatre.
