All people sleep. So do all other mammals. Birds sleep, too. Even snakes, fish, and insects have a way of sleeping. How different animals sleep on land, in water, and in the air-and the special ways they do it-is the subject of this fascinating book for young readers. Using accessible language and scientifically accurate terms, author Mary Batten shows how animals sleep in very different ways and for various lengths of time depending on their size, their physiology, and their habitat. From three-toed sloths hanging from tree branches to dolphins dozing near the ocean's surface, Batten presents a rich variety of wildlife and animal behavior. Additional information about the featured animals as well as simple explanations of terms such as hibernation and torpor are included in sidebars throughout the book. Enhancing the text are illustrator Higgins Bond's vivid, realistic wildlife illustrations feature animals in their natural environments.

Named one of Amazon’s Best Short Story Collections of 2014 One of Atlanta Journal Constitution’s 9 Best Books of 2014 Best Short Story Collection of the Year, Tweed's Magazine Winner of GLCA New Writers Award for Fiction 2014 LA Times Book Prize Finalist Winner of the Florida Book Awards Silver Medal for Fiction Nominated for the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction “A debut collection of unsparing yet warmly empathetic stories…akin to both Anton Chekhov and Raymond Carver in humane spirit and technical mastery” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). The Heaven of Animals, award-winning young writer David James Poissant’s stunning debut, has been one of the most-praised story collections of the year. Named one of Amazon’s Best Short Story Collections of 2014, compared to the work of Richard Ford and Amy Hemple in the Los Angeles Review of Books, to Anton Chekhov, Raymond Carver, and George Saunders in the New York Post, and the subject of a full-page rave by Clyde Edgerton in Garden & Gun, this “collection of vicious and heartbreaking vignettes” (The Orlando Sentinel) is a must-read for any fiction lover. In each of the stories in this remarkable debut, Poissant explores the tenuous bonds of family—fathers and sons, husbands and wives—as they are tested by the sometimes brutal power of love. His strikingly true-to-life characters have reached a precipice, chased there by troubles of their own making. Standing at the brink, each must make a choice: Leap, or look away? Pulitzer Prize finalist Lee Martin writes that Poissant forces us “to face the people we are when we’re alone in the dark.” From two friends racing to save the life an alligator in “Lizard Man” to a girl helping her boyfriend face his greatest fears in “The End of Aaron,” from a man who stalks death on an Atlanta street corner to a brother’s surprise at the surreal, improbable beauty of a late night encounter with a wolf, Poissant creates worlds that shine with honesty and dark complexity, but also with a profound compassion. These are stories hell-bent on hope. Fresh, smart, lively, and wickedly funny, The Heaven of Animals is startlingly original and compulsively readable. As bestselling author Kevin Wilson puts it, “Poissant is a writer who knows us with such clarity that we wonder how he found his way so easily into our hearts and souls.”

It is autumn and as many forest animals are settling down to hibernate, others take up their instruments to play a special winter lullaby. The forest orchestra is organised by the Dormouse, who heads off to sleep, reminding the others that under no circumstances must they wake Mr Bear. At first all is quiet but then, suddenly, a group of merry-making wolves crash into the forest. They are a lively bunch, and don't care about not waking Mr Bear - they just want to party! Their joie de vivre is infectious and it's not long before the forest orchestra have swapped their flutes and harps for guitars and speakers. It's all tremendous fun until a dark, bear-shaped shadow looms over the forestOA funny story that also teaches the importance of the rhythms of nature.

In consequence of significant social, political, economic, and demographic changes several wildlife species are currently growing in numbers and recolonizing Europe. While this is rightly hailed as a success of the environmental movement, the return of wildlife brings its own issues. As the animals arrive in the places we inhabit, we are learning anew that life with wild nature is not easy, especially when the accumulated cultural knowledge and experience pertaining to such coexistence have been all but lost. This book provides a hermeneutic study of the ways we come to understand the troubling impacts of wildlife by exploring and critically discussing the meanings of 'ecological discomforts'. Thus, it begins the work of rebuilding the culture of coexistence. The cases presented in this book range from crocodile attacks to mice infestations, and their analysis consequently builds up an ethics that sees wildlife as active participants in the shaping of human moral and existential reality. This book is of interest not only to environmental philosophers, who will find here an original contribution to the established ethical discussions, but also to wildlife managers, and even to those members of the public who themselves struggle to make sense of encounters with their new wild neighbors.
