Shots, injections, needles, and vaccines-whatever their purpose, they all hurt. More than half of children in the 6-17 year-old range report a strong fear of needles. Nearly 25% of adults do as well. This book is for those families who cringe at the thought of getting one. For some children, getting a shot is a major ordeal. Ramped-up anxiety can lead to tantrums, meltdowns, outbursts and even fainting. That 30-second experience can be a nightmare for parents for and nursing staff alike. This resource will help to improve that dreaded scenario. The book opens with an engaging story for children where rhyme, colorful illustrations and characters of diversity capture a child's interest as they identify with a girl who has similar fears. The children's section is followed by a comprehensive guide for parents and caregivers, based on empirical research as well as Dr. Zelinger's decades of experience as a child psychologist, where she offers information and explicit solutions to help deal with the anxiety surrounding this common medical procedure. Children will: • Identify with the main character and her fear of shots • Enjoy the colorful illustrations and happy story ending • Learn coping mechanisms to deal with frightening situations • Feel supported by their parents who will know how to help • Reduce their anxiety and become more cooperative during medical visits Parents/Caregivers will: • Understand the reasoning behind the fear of injections • Learn strategies to help their child before and during a medical visit • Be better able to comfort their child "Dr. Laurie Zelinger has done it again with another excellent child and parent-friendly book that helps to allay fears and empower families and professionals with the tools to help children develop healthy coping skills. Please Explain Vaccines to Me has it all: a relatable and simple yet engaging text in rhyme that is fun to read aloud, as well as colorful illustrations that provide an honest and relatable depiction of the emotions involved. As an experienced nurse and health educator, I see this book as a "must-have" resource for all caregivers, educators and health professionals." --Darlene Glasser, RN, MSEd "Please Explain Vaccines to Me is a book that every parent will want to read to their child before getting a shot. It demystifies vaccinations with language that a child will both understand and want to question further. It also gives both children and parents the language they need to express their anxiety about the process and the tools to lessen that anxiety. It gets 5 stars!" --Yael Kula, MSW, LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) Learn more at www.DrZelinger.com From the "Please Explain" series at Loving Healing Press www.LHPress.com

Can we change the minds of science deniers? Encounters with flat earthers, anti-vaxxers, coronavirus truthers, and others. "Climate change is a hoax--and so is coronavirus." "Vaccines are bad for you." These days, many of our fellow citizens reject scientific expertise and prefer ideology to facts. They are not merely uninformed--they are misinformed. They cite cherry-picked evidence, rely on fake experts, and believe conspiracy theories. How can we convince such people otherwise? How can we get them to change their minds and accept the facts when they don't believe in facts? In this book, Lee McIntyre shows that anyone can fight back against science deniers, and argues that it's important to do so. Science denial can kill. Drawing on his own experience--including a visit to a Flat Earth convention--as well as academic research, McIntyre outlines the common themes of science denialism, present in misinformation campaigns ranging from tobacco companies' denial in the 1950s that smoking causes lung cancer to today's anti-vaxxers. He describes attempts to use his persuasive powers as a philosopher to convert Flat Earthers; surprising discussions with coal miners; and conversations with a scientist friend about genetically modified organisms in food. McIntyre offers tools and techniques for communicating the truth and values of science, emphasizing that the most important way to reach science deniers is to talk to them calmly and respectfully--to put ourselves out there, and meet them face to face.

Smallpox, measles, diphtheria, polio: vaccines have diminished their power, and in some cases, eradicated these dreaded diseases. Yet this century has seen growing numbers of parents refusing vaccinations for their children, not only endangering them but also increasing the risk of outbreaks and epidemics of vaccine-preventable diseases. Understanding and Managing Vaccine Concerns concisely explains the evolution of vaccine concerns, and gives clinicians hands-on help in dealing with vaccine hesitation and outright refusal among parents. Persistent themes in refusal, such as a supposed autism/vaccine link and the belief that too many vaccines are given too soon, are discussed and recent statistics given for trends in vaccine refusal and delay. Central to the book is a detailed guide to vaccine concern management, with sample responses that readers can tailor to address vaccine refusal and specific concerns regarding individual vaccines and their components. This thorough grounding will assist providers in countering misinformation with facts and allaying fears with medically and ethically sound responses. Included in this practical resource: A brief history of vaccine concerns. Current trends in vaccine hesitancy and refusal. Health implications of vaccine refusal. Characteristics and beliefs of vaccine-concerned parents. The CASE approach: a management strategy for vaccine concerns. Additional considerations in management strategies. The debate over vaccination isn't going away any time soon and neither is the potential threat to public health, making Understanding and Managing Vaccine Concerns a timely and necessary addition to the libraries of pediatricians, nurses and other healthcare providers.

Vaccination plays a crucial role in controlling and significantly eradicating many diseases. It reduces the burden of illness and saves countless lives worldwide. Vaccination is an essential tool in public health, directly impacting several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as it contributes to better education (SDG 4), healthier populations (SDG 3), lower poverty (SDG 1) and hunger (SDG 2), and cleaner water and sanitation (SDG 6). Misconceptions about vaccines can lead people to distrust vaccination effectiveness or safety. Such misconceptions are often spread through word of mouth, social media, or alternative health communities. Therefore, “vaccine education and promotion” is crucial to inform and encourage people to vaccinate by providing accurate scientific information and implementing vaccination programs, emphasizing their benefits, safety, and importance in preventing infectious diseases. This Research Topic focuses on new developments in “vaccine education and promotion” in several settings, such as schools, workplaces, and communities, as well as through traditional press media and social media. We aim to include studies of public health campaigns, school health activities, production of vaccine educational materials, community outreach, and diverse communication to address concerns or misinformation about vaccines. The goal is to find ways of increasing vaccine rates and promoting public health by ensuring people make informed decisions about their health and the health of their communities. This Research Topic welcomes the submission of manuscripts focused on “vaccine education and promotion” that, among others, can address the following: • Diverse strategies for vaccine education and promotion, including but not limited to several settings (schools, workplaces, communities, etc) and traditional press media and social media; • Gender issues and health inequalities related to vaccination; • Emphasis on the underlying framework/program theory, the planning, the implementation process, and the evaluation of the vaccination promotion initiative; • Vaccine education and promotion initiatives' impact and lessons; • Active ingredients, favorable conditions and specific competencies for successful vaccine-promoting initiatives.

Values And Vaccine Refusal written by Mark Navin and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-16 with Philosophy categories.

Parents in the US and other societies are increasingly refusing to vaccinate their children, even though popular anti-vaccine myths – e.g. ‘vaccines cause autism’ – have been debunked. This book explains the epistemic and moral failures that lead some parents to refuse to vaccinate their children. First, some parents have good reasons not to defer to the expertise of physicians, and to rely instead upon their own judgments about how to care for their children. Unfortunately, epistemic self-reliance systematically distorts beliefs in areas of inquiry in which expertise is required (like vaccine immunology). Second, vaccine refusers and mainstream medical authorities are often committed to different values surrounding health and safety. For example, while vaccine advocates stress that vaccines have low rates of serious complications, vaccine refusers often resist vaccination because it is ‘unnatural’ and because they view vaccine-preventable diseases as a ‘natural’ part of childhood. Finally, parents who refuse vaccines rightly resist the utilitarian moral arguments – ‘for the greater good’ – that vaccine advocates sometimes make. Unfortunately, vaccine refusers also sometimes embrace a pernicious hyper-individualism that sanctions free-riding on herd immunity and that cultivates indifference to the interpersonal and social harms that unvaccinated persons may cause.
