Augustus the Strong of Saxony's life was consumed by two addictions: the relentless pursuit of power and the no less relentless pursuit of pleasure. From his accession as Elector of Saxony in 1694 he pursued political power and glory by fighting the Ottoman Turks, purchasing the Polish throne and warring against Sweden. By seeking to attach parts of the Ottoman, Swedish and Habsburg domains to his Saxon realm Augustus' aim was eventually to supplant the Habsburg Holy Roman Emperors. But his hedonistic lifestyle continually distracted him and when finally defeated in 1707, he found himself back in Saxony fornicating and plotting revenge. This biography, based on primary German sources, tells the story of his remarkable life.

On September 11, 2001, Alison Lanza Falls had a great career as a Wall Street banker, a caring and supportive family, and an enormous secret. She was silently and profoundly unhappy. Nine years after watching smoke billow from the World Trade Center where she was heading for a meeting, Alison began an incredible journey of personal transformation, with guidance from David Prudhomme, mind coach and founder of Mederi Wellness. While chronicling the evolution of her remarkable life, Alison shares her unique experiences and important life lessons using Prudhommes framework, The Best Me NOW!, that guided her through an experiential process on how to choose emotions, let go and feel free, practice forgiveness, release deep-seated fears, love herself and others unconditionally, and accept and embrace her uniqueness. Alisons story reveals simple, practical lessons for anyone interested in improving self-talk, applying universal truths in a professional setting, and preparing the mind for excellence, proving that positive change is not only possible, but also that it follows a specific path of perception, awareness, and choice. Be Happy NOW! combines two unique voices to share an inspiring story of transformation and life lessons intended to guide others on how to attain authentic happiness and a true understanding of self.

'Terrific. So funny' Zadie Smith 'Monstrously depressing but so comic and well observed that I didn't really mind .... It is great' Dolly Alderton 'A dark comedy of female rage' Catherine Lacey 'Brilliant. For fans of Ottessa Moshfegh's My Year of Rest and Relaxation' Pandora Sykes 'Funny, shocking, clever, and hugely entertaining' Roddy Doyle 'A definitive work of milennial literature' Jia Tolentino 'The best thing I've read in years' Emma Jane Unsworth 'Vicious ... hilariously spot on' Guardian In a windowless office, a woman explains something from her real, nonwork life - about the frustration and indignity of returning her online shopping - to her colleagues. One wears a topknot. Another checks her pedometer. Watching them all is Millie. Thirty-years-old and an eternal temp, she says almost nothing, almost all of the time. But then the possibility of a permanent job arises. Will it bring the new life Millie is envisioning - one involving a gym membership, a book club, and a lot less beer and TV - finally within reach? Or will it reveal just how hollow that vision has become? 'Made me laugh and cry enough times to feel completely reborn' The Paris Review 'A definite work of millennial literature. Wretchedly riveting, with the sick, obsessive pleasure of looking under a bandage at a wound' The New Yorker 'So darkly funny and acutely observed that it feels like a documentary' Andrew McMillan 'Anyone who has ever felt like their life is going nowhere - and to make it worse, going nowhere in an achingly slow manner - will recognize themselves' Nylon

Ambition written by Eckart Goebel and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-02 with Philosophy categories.

We describe people who are “consumed” or “devoured” by ambition as if by a predator or an out-of-control inferno. Thinkers since deepest antiquity have raised these questions, approaching the subject of ambition with ambivalence and often trepidation-as when the ancient Greek poet Hesiod proposed a differentiation between the good and the bad goddess Eris. Indeed, ambition as a longing for immortal fame seems to be one of the unique hallmarks of the human species. While philosophy has touched only occasionally on the problem of burning ambition, sociology, psychoanalysis, and world literature have provided rich and more revealing descriptions and examples of its shaping role in human history. Drawing on a long and varied tradition of writing on this topic, ranging from the works of Homer through Shakespeare, Freud, and Kafka and from the history of ancient Greece and Rome to the Italian Renaissance and up to the present day (to modernity and the current neoliberal era), Eckart Goebel explores our driving passion for recognition - that insatiable hunter in the mirror - and power.

Why you should read this book I often think why people purchase books with a title like this. May be, the answer can be summarised in an experience I have had experienced teaching high ambition and individual development programmes across India and overseas. At the commencement of the programme, I ask participants, "Why did you come today?" The initial responses run something like: "Well, I want to achieve something in life." "My boss asked me to come" "I want to achieve maximum in minimum time" "I want to be like my friend who is very rich" However, people state it, the responses generally come to one very simple idea: "I am here because I want to learn, move ahead in my life, thereby feel better about myself and my life." I recently came across an article and a couple of books that talk about an important part of this issue of growing fast - financially, professionally and personally at a rapid pace. As we know in the current scenario, life is getting more and more hectic. The daily treadmill is accelerating, and we have to run faster and faster just to stay ahead. The demands of the competitive marketplace put such premium on personal achievement that if you are not achieving your targets, you are not productive, you are out. The result is tremendous pressure to perform, coupled with a sense of overwhelming insecurity about the future. Unfortunately, peace, productivity and pleasure (3Ps) are three commodities that seem to be in short supply today because people sense that they are not in control of their lives as they have become overambitious in this rat race. The focus of this book is to understand ambitions, what individuals need to imbibe to build and manage in the competitive environment. You should read this book so that you become a person who believes in planning and achieving the pre-set goals through grit and determination on a regular basis. Ambition can be defined as a strong desire to do or achieve the dreams and goals through focused hard work and determination. The ambitious executive has a drive, determination, strong desire, initiative, inbuilt eagerness, intrinsic motivation, enthusiasm, zeal, commitment, a strong sense of purpose long yearning to achieve extraordinary heights. Individuals with these quality traits stand out as people who constantly drive towards their dreams and goals. This is book is meant for people who want to personally and professionally grow in their career. A must read book for people with ambitious mindset.

The Modest Ambition of Andrew Marvell deals with the specific historical presences and pressures that led Marvell to devise his defenses of Richard Lovelace, Oliver Cromwell, Thomas Fairfax, and John Milton. It also focuses on the poetic or formal response that Marvell makes to historical fact, not only in the strategies of his language, but also in the perceptible adjustments such strategies signal for his self-appointed role as poet-apologist.
