Artists' collections often provide fascinating insights into the creative process. Knowing it internally, the collecting artist has an acute sensitivity, respect, and love for this mysterious phenomenon-its origins, its exploratory twists and turns, and its sometimes daunting standards of perfection. This yields a particular relationship between the collector and the collection-not one of subject to object, but rather a sympathetic and delighted dialogue between personalities bent on creativity. The collection of Eunice and Hal David instantly bespeaks this artistic rapport. Filling most of the walls in their airy home-where views encompass inviting couches and chairs, contemporary sculptures, and a baby grand piano-are drawings by many of the individuals who have shaped the course of nineteenth-and twentieth-century art - from Edouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, and Gustav Klimt to Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Robert Motherwell, Andy Warhol, and David Hockney. The Davids have always lived with their collection, and seeing it in their home and talking to them about it, one is struck by their ongoing pleasure in it and its integral relation to their own creative world of music and lyrics. Interweaving notions of identity and subjectivity, spatial contexts, materiality and meaning, this collection makes a significant contribution to debates around the status and interpretation of visual and material culture. Material Cultures, 1740-1920 has four primary theoretical and historiographic lines of inquiry. The first is how concepts of otherness and difference inform, imbricate, and impose themselves on identity and the modes of acquisition as well as the objects themselves. The second concern explores the intricacies of how objects and their subjects negotiate and represent spatial narratives. The third thread attempts to unravel the ideological underpinnings of collections of individuals which inevitably and invariably rub up against the social, the institutional, and the political. Finally, at the heart of Material Cultures, 1740-1920 is an intervention moving beyond the disciplinary ethos of material culture to argue more firmly for the aesthetic, visual, and semiotic potency inseparable from any understanding of material objects integral to the lives of their collecting subjects. The collection argues that objects are semiotic conduits or signs of meanings, pleasures, and desires that are deeply subjective; more often than not, they reveal racial, gendered, and sexual identities. As the volume demonstrates through its various case studies, material and visual cultures are not as separate as our current disciplinary ethos would lead us to believe.

The book comprises an overview of Japonisme and the translation into English of two important French texts detailing the trade in Asian art at this time: Notes d'un Bibeloteur au Japon by the art dealer Philippe Sichel (1839/40-99) and Souvenirs d'un vieil Amateur d'Art de l'Extrême-Orient by the collector Raymond Koechlin (1860-1931). Both translations are extensively annotated. A discussion of the content and significance of the translations as well as short biographical sketches of Sichel and Koechlin are also included. Plunder and Pleasure casts new light on the subject of Western tastes for East Asian art during this period and furthers our understanding of the cultural relations between the Far East and the West that were going on at this time.

I thank all of the artists who created the art that has given me utmost pleasure over many years. I have wonderful memories of time spent with the artists who became my friends. Additionally, I thank all those who appreciated my art collection and helped with the downsizing.
