Tests were conducted in the Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel (1T) of the Propulsion Wind Tunnel Facility to determine the effects of test section plenum chamber volume on the centerline Mach number distributions, wave-cancellation properties of perforated walls, model force data, and tunnel acoustics at Mach numbers from 0.6 to 1.3. Results were obtained with plenum chambers of four different sizes at plenum-to-test section volume ratios between 8.3 and 0.8. Reducing plenum volume produced no measurable effect at Mach numbers below 0.95. At Mach numbers above 0.95, decreasing the plenum volume increased the internal plenum losses, increased the plenum suction requirements, and increased the centerline Mach number deviations; however, the Mach number deviations were small at Mach numbers below 1.15. Reducing the plenum volume also produced a small increase in the effective wall porosity but had no measurable effect on measured model forces except to increase the forebody drag coefficient at Mach numbers above 1.05. Changes in the plenum volume had no significant effect on tunnel acoustics. (Author).

The origins of the Cultural Revolution are still shrouded in uncertainty. Crucial questions either remain unanswered or have been given answers which derive from conflicting interpretations. To what period can the direct origins of the Cultural Revolution be traced? What issues, if any, divided the leadership, and how deep were these divisions? What was the state of power relations and what was Mao’s position? Why did developments in the period preceding the Cultural Revolution reach a climax in such a convulsion? Between Two Plenums examines these questions as they apply to the years 1959–1962. At base, the perspective of pre-Cultural Revolution politics adopted therein is that of “conflict” rather than “consensus.” From this vantage point, the Eighth and Tenth Plenums loom in retrospect as important watersheds in the development of the intraleadership conflict which culminated in the great upheaval.

A floor plenum is a void between a building's floor structure and a raised access floor, used for distributing conditioned air to the spaces above. It is important that conditioned air in a floor plenum flows into the occupied zone and does not leak into cavities, risers, stairwells, heating trenches or other adjacent zones. A properly sealed floor plenum will allow the diffusers and grilles to fulfil their primary role of delivering air at the correct flow rate. The airtightness of floor plenums can be a serious energy efficiency issue. This BSRIA guide addresses these issues and places upper limits on the air leakage of floor plenums. There are two components to this leakage: plenum leakage and raised access floor leakage. A testing methodology for both plenum leakage and raised access floor leakage is given, and guidance on achieving both is provided.

In order to aid in the design of the National Transonic Facility (NTF) control system, test section/plenum response studies were carried out in a 0.186 scale model of the NTF high speed duct. Two types of disturbances, those induced by the model and those induced by the compressor inlet guide vanes were simulated. Some observations with regard to the test section/plenum response tests are summarized as follows. A resonance frequency for the test section/plenum area of the tunnel of approximately 50 Hz was observed for Mach numbers from 0.40 to 0.90. However, since the plenum is 3.1 times (based on volume) too large for the scaled size of the test section, care must be taken in extrapolating these data to NTF conditions. The plenum pressure data indicate the existence of pressure gradients in the plenum. The test results indicate that the difference between test section static pressure and plenum pressure is dependent on test section flow conditions. Plenum response to inlet guide vane type disturbances appears to be slower than plenum response to test section disturbances. Gloss, B. B.
