Following Italy's unification in 1861, architects, artists, politicians, and literati engaged in volatile debates over the pursuit of national and regional identity. Growing industrialization and urbanization across the country contrasted with the rediscovery of traditionally built forms and objects created by the agrarian peasantry. Pride in Modesty argues that these ordinary, often anonymous, everyday things inspired and transformed Italian art and architecture from the 1920s through the 1970s. Through in-depth examinations of texts, drawings, and buildings, Michelangelo Sabatino finds that the folk traditions of the pre-industrial countryside have provided formal, practical, and poetic inspiration directly affecting both design and construction practices over a period of sixty years and a number of different political regimes. This surprising continuity allows Sabatino to reject the division of Italian history into sharply delimited periods such as Fascist Interwar and Democratic Postwar and to instead emphasize the long, continuous process that transformed pastoral and urban ideals into a new, modernist Italy.

Il Medianum della Casa di Giove e Ganimede (II sec. d.C.), tornato ad una concezione introversa della dimora, diventa per l’architetto adrianeo che ne fu autore uno spazio diffi cile e nuovo, da indagare progettualmente perché non canonico – come era invece l’atrio del Domus classica. Ne nasce uno spazio impuro e ambiguo, affascinante per un architetto davvero moderno come Mario De Renzi. Egli, basando il progetto Furmanik sui principi del Medianum si trova in una condizione altrettanto, se non più difficile di quella dell’architetto della Casa di Giove e Ganimede. Il modo di vivere moderno non sopporta la scarsità di luce di molti spazi d’uso della dimora antica. Dividendo il Medianum in due parti, in quella esterna De Renzi raggiunge agevolmente l’obbiettivo di ricreare lo spazio unificato, indifferenziato e luminoso suggerito dalla case a Medianum. Ma egli comprende che alla parte più interna del suo Medianum è affidata la maggiore innovazione, quella di trasformare il cosiddetto “connettivo di servizio” dell’abitazione razionale nello spazio fondamentale per la vita interiore del nucleo famigliare. Per questo ne elabora due varianti: la prima ancora troppo soggetta ai vincoli della divisione delle funzioni e dei percorsi, la seconda (forse progettata per prima) dilatata e coinvolgente in profondità ogni spazio vitale dell’abitazione. Quasi dieci anni dopo l’esperienza della Furmanik, nel 1947, De Renzi affronta di nuovo il tema dell’alloggio signorile con un progetto non realizzato a Roma, in Via Martelli. Si tratta di una palazzina classica, quattro piani più attico arretrato, ma con un solo appartamento a piano. Mario De Renzi sembra ricominciare dove aveva lasciato il progetto Furmanik; si applica con grande determinazione alla ricerca sullo spazio interiore della casa, la parte interna del suo Medianum, non risolta perfettamente nel progetto Furmanik.

[English]:Starting from one of the most significant chapters of Leonardo's Libro di Pittura, we hwant to focus on the media - namely on the narrative, descriptive and graphics methodologies together with the techniques adopting during the modern and contemporary age as 'diffusers' of the landscape image - and on the deriving potential models for the enhancement of the historical landscape heritage.Partendo dalla nozione di paesaggio nella storia moderna e contemporanea, nel testo si affrontano le problematiche concernenti l‟evoluzione del suo significato fino al dibattito sulle diverse accezioni recentemente acquisite, con particolare riferimento ai contesti storici urbani. La lezione che si trae dai primi studi di Leonardo sulla percezione del paesaggio naturale e antropizzato, dalle guide e taccuini di viaggio del Cinque e Seicento, fino alla produzione di artisti e viaggiatori tra Sette e Ottocento e al più recente repertorio fotografico o cinematografico, mostra l‟importante ruolo da attribuirsi oggi all‟immagine storica del paesaggio quale strumento per l‟individuazione dell‟identità di un territorio, ormai in buona parte scevra da meri contenuti percettivi e oleografici, e sempre più legata ai fattori umani, storici e sociali, in una parola „culturali‟, che nell‟immagine vanno letti e tradotti. / [Italiano]: Si tratta in effetti di riconoscere nei caratteri „percettibili‟ di un paesaggio, attraverso gli strumenti della storia della città e dell‟iconografia storica, i valori culturali condivisi di un sito o di un insediamento: in tal senso l‟esperienza del Convegno CIRICE 2016 potrà segnare un nuovo passo non solo ai fini di un più consapevole riconoscimento di tali valori attraverso lo studio dei media adottati nella descrizione del paesaggio storico, ma verso un‟azione di tutela volta alla trasmissione e valorizzazione della memoria di quei luoghi.
