Paroisse primitive du diocèse de Saint-Brieuc au Ve siècle. PLOURHAN fut élevé au rang de comté par le duc de Bretagne vers le début du XIIe siècle. La paroisse éclata, par la suite, au profit de Saint-Quay et Etables qui prirent de l'importance du fait des « havres » de Portrieux et de Binic. Sa richesse et son rôle de pôle d'attraction diminua d'autant mais elle conserva toutefois de nombreuses « maisons nobles ». Fernand HÉLARY, né à Plourhan, le 23 avril 1926 d'une famille établie sur la commune depuis la Révolution de 1789 Ancien directeur régional d'une société de comptabilité et fiscalité dans le Finistère. Se consacre actuellement à des recherches historiques, particulièrement sur la Marine à Brest.
