Collective Intentionality is a relatively new label for a basic social fact: the sharing of attitudes such as intentions, beliefs and emotions. This volume contributes to current research on collective intentionality by pursuing three aims. First, some of the main conceptual problems in the received literature are introduced, and a number of new insights into basic questions in the philosophy of collective intentionality are developed (part 1). Second, examples are given for the use of the analysis of collective intentionality in the theory and philosophy of the social sciences (part 2). Third, it is shown that this line of research opens up new perspectives on classical topics in the history of social philosophy and social science, and that, conversely, an inquiry into the history of ideas can lead to further refinement of our conceptual tools in the analysis of collective intentionality (part 3).

Evil In Joint Action written by Hans Bernhard Schmid and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-19 with Philosophy categories.
Joining insights from social science and philosophy, this book offers a nuanced view on the discourse of evil, which has been on the rise in the West in recent years. Exploring the famous ‘Pear Theft’ episode in St Augustine’s Confessions, it looks beyond the theological implications of the event to focus instead on the secular insights that it offers when the event is placed in the context of social thought. With attention to Augustine’s lengthy reflections on a seemingly marginal episode, the author contends that it is possible to discern the elements of a convincing account of intentional evil action, the Pear Theft representing a case of joint radical improvisation that lacks collective deliberation. As such, a new perspective emerges on familiar and more intuitive forms of evil in joint action that involve group identification and institutional action. Evil in Joint Action will appeal to scholars of sociology, social theory and philosophy with interests in ethics, collective action and concepts of evil.

Savas L. Tsohatzidis John Searle is famous for his contributions to two fields with long and dist- guished traditions within analytic philosophy—the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mind—, but his interests and achievements extend beyond these fields. From the early 1990s he has added to his research agenda a theme that was not only largely new to his philosophical preoccupations, but also largely absent from the concerns of analytic philosophy as a whole: the syst- atic examination of the mode of being of a particular kind of facts, institutional facts, that appear to be no less objectively knowable than ordinary physical facts, yet seem to be essentially dependent for their existence on the subjectivity of human minds (to recall one of his favourite examples, one can know that something is a piece of paper as objectively as one can know that it is a twenty-dollar bill, but something’s being a piece of paper does not depend on anyone’s taking it to be a piece of paper, whereas its being a twenty-dollar bill crucially depends on a lot of people taking it to be a twenty-dollar bill). Searle’s attempt to give a systematic account of the combination of epistemic objectivity and ontological subjectivity that, in his view, characterizes institutional facts has led to a full-blown theory that he presented in his 1995 book, The Construction of Social Reality, and further developed in his 2001 book, Rationality in Action.

Social Order in Multiagent Systems provides an overview of current approaches, problems, and considerations related to the study of norms and institutions in the context of multiagent systems. The contributions in this volume share the assumption that norms and other social institutions are of vital importance for the development of multiagent systems and agent-mediated interaction. Both formal and computational models of norms and normative systems are presented, including formal analysis of normative concepts and foundational models of norms; agent and systems architectures for implementing norms; and implemented systems. Social Order in Multiagent Systems is an excellent reference for researchers in artificial intelligence and computer science, and can be used as text for advanced level courses in multiagent systems.

“The aim of this book is to offer readers a comprehensive academic reference where specialists, students, and researchers in the literary and critical affairs can refer to the issues raised by the poet, and the strategies and rhetorical methods invoked by his writings.” The manuscript clearly contributes to scholars and students interested in learning about the Arabic language through the writings of renown poet Ali Abdullah Khalifa. Each chapter emphasizes the political, economic, historical, phonological, syntactical, and grammatical elements of Arabic morphology and literature. The final chapter by French poet and researcher Geneviève Buono displays the power of Khalifa’s writings and how well his poetry displays a determination to make meaning of the world. Khalifa offers clear and concrete similes to get his views across. He offers readers the opportunity to reflect on the written word and create their own interpretations through rhyme scheme and irony. His words are strung together to form sound, images, ideas, and meaning defined by 10 researchers through their meticulous analysis of his work. —Abdessattar Jamai, PhD ________________________________________________________________________ Anyone interested in acquiring an appreciation of Arabic poetry should delve into this book. The authors of Structures and Visions turn each moment of Khalifa’s poetry into an emotional reality through a step-by-step explication of his writing. They examine with keen astuteness his language style and poetic skills. The resulting text, adeptly translated for the reader of English, emphasizes the uniqueness of Khalifa’s choice of words and unusual use of punctuation marks.
