En este estudio presentamos experiencias reales de democracia participativa en el funcionamiento de las instituciones del Estado, lo público-social, para el diseño, control y ejecución de políticas públicas. Son espacios de cogobierno: a) contraloría social sobre el desempeño de la administración pública y entidades privadas de servicio público (Colombia y Bolivia); b) consejos de políticas públicas sectoriales o temáticas desde los municipios, estados y federación (Brasil); c) la gestión directa de los asuntos públicos locales (Concejos Comunales en Venezuela) y la cogestión de los asuntos locales en los tres niveles de gobierno (Comités de Defensa de la Revolución en Cuba). El poder social sirve a la sociedad organizada para actuar por sí misma en la esfera pública, restringe el abuso de poder y obliga a gobernantes, funcionarios y empresarios a ceñirse al interés público; orienta los recursos públicos hacia necesidades colectivas con sentido redistributivo haciendo partícipes a las comunidades en la gestión de sus problemas.

Whilst the politics of reproduction have been at the heart of feminist struggles for over a century and a half, their analysis has not yet come to occupy a central place in the interdisciplinary study of citizenship. This volume takes up the challenge posed by Bryan Turner, when he noted "the absence of any systematic thinking about familial relations, reproduction and citizenship" (2008), and offers the first major global collection of work exploring this nexus of practices and political contestations. The book brings together citizenship scholars from across Europe, the Americas, and Australia to develop feminist and queer analyses of the relationship between citizenship and reproduction, and to explore the ways in which citizenship is reproduced. Extending the foundational work of feminist political theorists and sociologists who have interrogated the public/private dichotomy on which traditional civic republican and liberal understandings of citizenship rest, the contributors examine the biological, sexual, and technological realities of natality, and the social realities of the intimate intergenerational material and affective labour that are generative of citizens, and that serve to reproduce membership of, and belonging to, states, nations, societies, and thus of "citizenship" itself. This book was published as a special issue of Citizenship Studies.

En esta obra se presentan resultados de investigación sobre cómo se expresa la ciudadanía y los derechos en la atención a la salud de las mujeres, en particular, al de la información, en el cáncer de mama y el cervical; dos problemas por demás importantes en México. Se indaga con profundidad cómo las mujeres viven, perciben y elaboran sus experiencias en la atención a la salud propia y la de sus familias en los servicios de salud, pues en sus narrativas es inevitable reconocer la importancia que representa la atención de sus hijos. El título En letras chiquitas se eligió como una analogía a esa parte de los contratos o relaciones de servicios de la que poco nos enteramos; en este estudio se observó un ejercicio limitado de derechos y, en ocasiones, franca omisión, tanto de parte de quienes prestan los servicios de salud, como de sus propias titulares, las mujeres. Aun en los procesos de apropiación de ellas, así como el despliegue de estrategias de resistencia y confrontación por sus derechos, su respeto no es una cuestión de voluntad individual, sino de una serie de condiciones estructurales en el sistema de salud y de los procesos de ciudadanización en México. Estos tipos de cáncer presentan algunas particularidades, que le imprimen rasgos y condiciones igualmente específicas a la experiencia de si detección oportuna, como su relación cercana con la feminidad, intimidad y sexualidad. La ciudadanía es un estatus, pero además es un proceso dinámico, dialéctico y complejo que se ejerce en el ámbito colectivo e individual. Para las mujeres, la atención de su salud, la apropiación y el ejercicio de derechos puede convertirse en lucha permanente, y es en este sentido que nos referimos a una ciudadanía en construcción.
