O jornalista, crítico e poeta Mário Faustino (1930-1962) via o escritor como um intérprete de sua época e de seu povo, fortemente ligado ao presente histórico. Ao mesmo tempo, acreditava que o poeta deveria ser capaz de identificar a beleza na tradição e seguir inovando para se projetar no futuro. Para ele, a função social do poeta era agir por meio da linguagem, modificando a língua e, por extensão, as formas de pensamento e de percepção do mundo.Suas idéias sobre poesia começaram a aparecer nas páginas do Suplemento Dominical do Jornal do Brasil, na coluna Poesia-Experiência, que Faustino manteve entre 1956 e 1959. Nela, o escritor criticava a letargia da poesia, da crítica e do jornalismo literários brasileiros. Defendia uma linguagem menos discursiva, que procurasse apresentar em vez de representar o objeto. Para ele, o poema era um corpo vivo, orgânico, do qual nenhuma parte poderia ser suprimida e ao qual nada poderia ser acrescentado. Por detrás dessa concepção da literatura estava o objetivo de infundir a escrita da experiência vivida e de devolver à vida o artesanato da palavra poética.De suas diversas influências, Faustino escolheu uma frase do poeta Ezra Pound como lema para a sua prática literária: "Repetir para aprender, criar para inovar". Para cumprir esse programa, o poeta utilizou procedimentos criativos típicos de outras artes - como a colagem cubista, tomada das artes plásticas, e a montagem, emprestada do cinema do diretor russo Sergei Eisenstein. Os poetas que lhe serviram de inspiração foram, principalmente, Stéphane Mallarmé e T.S. Eliot.O homem e sua hora foi o único livro de Mário Faustino publicado em vida. Este primeiro volume de sua obra poética e crítica traz também poemas esparsos, publicados entre 1948 e 1962, os "fragmentos poéticos" escritos entre 1960 e 1961, além de poemas inéditos, estabelecidos e fixados a partir dos originais guardados por seu amigo Benedito Nunes.

This book breaks new ground in considering the nature and function of anthologies of poetry and short stories in twentieth-century Portugal. It tackles the main theoretical issues, identifies a significant body of critical writing on the relationship between anthologies, literary history and the canon, and proposes an approach that might be designated Descriptive Anthology Studies. The author aims to achieve a full understanding of the role of anthologies in the literary polysystem. Moreover, this study considers anthologies published in Portugal in the early years of the twentieth-century, the influential figures who made them, the works they selected, and who read them. It also focuses on the principal publishing houses of the 1940s and 50s, and how their literary directors shaped public taste and promoted intercultural transfer. The author reveals tensions between conservative, nostalgic anthologies that promote an idyllic vision of rural Portugal, and collections of poems that question and challenge the status quo, whether in respect of the colonial wars or repressed female sexuality. The last part of the book explores anthology production in the period following the Revolution of 1974, observing the co-existence of traditional anthologising activity with new trends and innovations, and noting the role of women, both as anthologists and anthology items.

Este estudio tiene como objetivo explorar la producción literaria femenina posmodernista en la América Hispana a través del análisis de la obra de cuatro poetas nacidas a finales del siglo XIX. El trabajo de estas autoras ha sido identificado por reconocidos críticos literarios como obras dignas de explorarse. Las investigaciones que existen sobre el posmodernismo y su producción literaria, por lo general, apoyan sus estudios en obras escritas por poetas masculinos, siendo escasas las veces en que se trae a colación la obra de una autora como, por ejemplo, Gabriela Mistral. Sin embargo, en esta paradoja, de acuerdo con Federico de Onís, las mujeres son quienes destacan en este periodo. Evaluaciones como estas sugieren cabos sueltos que aún quedan por investigarse. Así, la misión principal de esta obra es incorporar a estas creadoras a los estudios sobre las obras de poetas olvidadas de principios del siglo XX, con el fin de eliminar el vacío que se percibe en la historia de la poesía hispanoamericana.
