lvaro de Campos, along with Ricardo Reis and Alberto Caeiro is one of Pessoa's most important poetic heteronyms and, like these fellow fictitious poets, made his first appearance in 1914. He was also something of a public figure, his essays and reviews frequently appearing in Portuguese periodicals. According to Pessoa, Campos was born in the Algarve in 1890, studied naval engineering in Glasgow, was widely travelled, and lived for a number of years in England, working as an engineer. In later life he returned to live in Lisbon. His poetry, especially the earlier work, celebrates the modern world and the machine age, and marks the eruption of futurism into Portuguese poetry. This volume offers the latter part of Campos' output. The Collected Earlier Poems will appear in due course.

'Não sou nada. Nunca serei nada. Não posso querer ser nada. À parte isso, tenho em mim todos os sonhos do mundo.' Álvaro de Campos foi o heterônimo mais produtivo da obra conhecida de Pessoa. Ao que parece, o poeta muitas vezes o utilizou como um alter ego, além de mero heterônimo. Disto resultou uma obra muito extensa em que se entrecruzam temas e estilos de escrita por vezes dissonantes entre si, próprios da mente de um poeta que se dividiu em muitas personalidades distintas. Esta edição não trará **todos** os poemas de Álvaro de Campos, dentre outras razões pelo fato de que há muitos que simplesmente são dissonantes demais dos outros para que coubessem numa mesma linha poética. O que tentei fazer aqui, então, foi uma seleção dos melhores poemas de Álvaro. Para tal, procurei privilegiar sua fase final, onde se aproximou quase que definitivamente do próprio Pessoa, enquanto ignorei boa parte de sua fase inicial, principalmente os poemas demasiadamente longos. Aos que se preocupam se alguns poemas clássicos foram deixados de fora, quero lembrar que 'Tabacaria', 'A partida', 'Poema em linha reta', 'Lisbon revisited' e todos os demais que seguem este mesmo estilo se encontram todos aqui. Na medida do possível, procurei ordenar os poemas selecionados por ordem cronológica. No entanto, sabemos que o próprio Pessoa costumava assinar alguns poemas com datas fictícias, então não há como se ter certeza absoluta de que todos foram efetivamente escritos nesta ordem.
