El libro XI de la Antología Palatina es la más amplia colección conservada de epigramas de tema convival y satírico-burlesco, que se datan desde época helenística hasta época bizantina, aunque su núcleo fundamental corresponde al siglo I d.C. Estos breves poemas tratan temas que van desde la celebración del vino y los banquetes, a sátiras de tipos humanos, como las de profesionales (médicos, astrólogos, poetas, etc.), costumbres (afeites femeninos, parásitos o desviaciones sexuales), vicios morales (envidia, adulación, avaricia, entre otros) o defectos físicos (pequeñez, fealdad, vejez, etc.). Resulta así una completa pintura de la sociedad de aquellos siglos, a través de una variadísima gama de recursos cómicos y de «agudezas» lingüísticas e intelectuales. Tanto los temas como los recursos empleados han tenido una influencia muy importante en la poesía posterior, en especial en la del Siglo de Oro. La Introducción ofrece una detallada visión de todos estos aspectos, así como también de la Antología Palatina en su conjunto.

This book deals with Greek lyric composed more than twenty-five centuries ago. These poems sing of everyday events and emotions in human life, from the most festive to the most serious, presenting a living portrait of the ancient Greeks. This multidisciplinary volume begins with a panorama of Greek lyric poetic genres, their main authors and their representative topics. The first part contains philological studies and literary analyses, first of some Greek poets—Anacreon, Sappho and Lycophron, among others—then of their influence on Horace’s Latin poetry, and on contemporary poetry. The second part, illustrated with colour images, studies Greek lyric from socio-political and iconographic perspectives, analysing its coincidences and reflections in images from Greek pottery, sculptures and reliefs. Our knowledge of ancient Greece has been transformed in the last century by an increased understanding of the cultures of the Ancient Near East. This is particularly true of ancient religion. This book looks at the relationship between the religious systems of Ancient Greece and the Hittites, who controlled Turkey in the Late Bronze Age (1400-1200 BC). The cuneiform texts preserved in the Hittite archives provide a particularly rich source for religious practice, detailing festivals, purification rituals, oracle-consultations, prayers, and myths of the Hittite state, as well as documenting the religious practice of neighbouring Anatolian states in which the Hittites took an interest. Hittite religion is thus more comprehensively documented than any other ancient religious tradition in the Near East, even Egypt. The Hittites are also known to have been in contact with Mycenaean Greece, known to them as Ahhiyawa. The book first sets out the evidence and provides a methodological paradigm for using comparative data. It then explores cases where there may have been contact or influence, such as in the case of scapegoat rituals or the Kumarbi-Cycle. Finally, it considers key aspects of religious practices shared by both systems, such as the pantheon, rituals of war, festivals, and animal sacrifice. The aim of such a comparison is to discover clues that may further our understanding of the deep history of religious practices and, when used in conjunction with historical data, illuminate the differences between cultures and reveal what is distinctive about each of them.

Catulo fue el primer poeta antiguo que describió todo un proceso amoroso apasionado, con lo que creó el género elegíaco latino. Tibulo es, con Propercio, el mejor de sus continuadores. Este volumen reúne los versos de dos de los tres grandes poetas elegíacos romanos (el otro es Propercio, a quien se ha dedicado otro tomo de esta colección). Catulo (Verona, h. 84-h. 54 a.C.) fue, además, el creador de este género. De familia rica, viajó en su juventud a Roma, donde se introdujo en los círculos literarios de los que darían en llamarse neotéricos o novi poetae ("nuevos poetas"), quienes tomaron como modelos no a sus antepasados romanos, sino a Calímaco y a los poetas griegos helenísticos, así como a líricos de siglos anteriores como Safo. Lo poco que sabemos de él es lo que revelan sus poemas, y lo principal de esto es su tempestuosa y apasionada relación con una mujer casada y bien situada, a la que se dirige con el nombre de Lesbia, pero que debió de llamarse Clodia en realidad. Catulo le dedica veinticinco poemas que abarcan todas las variantes del proceso amoroso, con múltiples y extremados altibajos. Estos poemas son los que más se recuerdan de su producción, que también incluye piezas de índole diversa (incidentes de la vida diaria, sátiras, críticas políticas, epitalamios...). Albio Tibulo (h. 55-19 a.C.), al parecer un importante caballero romano, se distinguió también en el cultivo de la poesía elegíaca. Amigo de Horacio y Ovidio, compuso dos libros de elegías, predominantemente amorosas, dedicadas a Delia (pseudónimo de Plania), a un muchacho (Marato) y a una chica (Némesis). Tibulo exaltó el amor romántico y apasionado, así como la bondad de la vida en el campo, y dedicó varios versos a su amistad con el gran político M. Valerio Mesala Corvino (al que probablemente acompañara en varias campañas). Su poesía pone de manifiesto delicadeza de sentimientos, cultura sin ostentación y buen gusto, así como un fino sentido del humor.
