In 1926, as a young man of 28 with a growing reputation as an oral poet, Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936) toyed with the idea of proving his worth in writing by bringing out a boxed set of three volumes of his verse. Because the Suites , Canciones , and the Poema del cante jondo eventually came out singly (in the case of the Suites , posthumously), readers have not always realised that they formed a single body of work -- one which, Lorca himself was surprised to note, has 'una rarisima unidad', an odd unity of aims and accomplishment. This is poetry which takes up the question of desire in progressively depersonalizing ways, and shows modernism coming into being. Through renunciation, by cutting away the personal and the taboo, Lorca created a poetry that, like no other in Europe, stood between the avant-garde and oral traditions, making their contradictions his truth. Before attaining his poetic maturity -- and this would be through poems written mostly in Spanish -- Huidobro wrote these two collections in French and published them in Paris in 1925, the same year that a volume of his manifestos appeared (see below). The two books have never been republished in France and have likewise not been published in Spanish translation other than in collected editions of the author's works. While they are in some respects a developmental dead-end for Huidobro, they do demonstrate his attempts to engage, in one volume, with the influence of Dada, and, in the other, with the influence of Surrealism. His later work transcends these overt influences and moves onto new pastures, but these experiments were necessary in order to get him there. The complete texts of both first editions are included here along with all the (later) Spanish versions of the poems, made by the author himself, that have so far come to light.

Lorca, Bunuel and Dali were, in their respective fields of poetry and theatre, cinema, and painting, three of the most imaginative creative artists of the twentieth century; their impact was felt far beyond the boundaries of their native Spain. But if individually they have been examined by many, their connected lives have rarely been considered. It is these, the ties that bind them, that constitute the subject of this illuminating book. They were born within six years of each other and, as Gwynne Edwards reveals, their childhood circumstances were very similar. Each was affected by a narrow-minded society and an intolerant religious background which equated sex with sin and led all three to experience sexual problems of different kinds: Lorca the guilt and anguish associated with his homosexuality; Bunuel feelings of sexual inhibition; and, Dali virtual impotence. Having met during the 1920s at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, they developed intense personal relationships and channelled their respective obsessions into the cultural forms then prevalent in Europe, in particular Surrealism. Rooted in emotional turmoil, their work - from Lorca's dramatic characters in search of sexual fulfilment, to Bunuel's frustrated men and women, and Dali's potent images of shame and guilt - is highly autobiographical. Their left-wing outrage directed at bourgeois values and the Catholic Church was strongly felt, and in the case of Lorca in particular, was sharpened by the catastrophic Civil War of 1936-9, during the first months of which he was murdered by Franco's fascists. The war hastened Bunuel's departure to France and Mexico and Dali's to New York. Edwards describes how, for the rest of his life, Bunuel clung to his left-wing ideals and made outstanding films, while the increasingly eccentric and money-obsessed Dali embraced Fascism and the Catholic Church, and saw his art go into rapid decline.

Edna St. Vincent Millay was born in Rockport, Maine on February 22, 1892. When she was twelve, her mother divorced her father. The mother and three daughters then moved regularly, very poor, with one of their special pleasures being reading classic literature to each other. All three girls grew up quite bright, and Edna's talent for poetry was known from a young age.In 1912, when Millay was only 20, she came in fourth in a poetry contest with her poem Renascence. She went to Vassar and then moved to New York City. She loved the world of poetry there and became friends with a number of famous poets. During this period a number of publishers and magazines sought her out. By the time 1917 came around, she had put together her very first book of poetry. This was published by Mitchell Kennerley. It was titled, in a straightforward way, Renascence and Other Poems. She was 25 years old.She quickly developed plans to publish a second book, originally titled A Stalk of Fennel, but which developed into Second April. Unfortunately, the publisher ran into problems. So it turns out her third book, A Few Figs from Thistles, actually got released second. She went with Frank Shay with it, since she was having so much trouble with Kennerley. Shay promptly published that book in autumn 1920.It wasn't until 1921 that this book here, Second April, finally got published by Kennerley. Unfortunately reviewers thought that these poems were written "after" / subsequent to the Thistles poems and complained about Millay's progress. Really, it wasn't her fault at all. It was the fault of Kennerley for dragging his feet on publishing this second book of poems.The trouble wore on Millay and she ended up re-editing Thistles both in 1921 and in 1922 to add more content to it. She was tussling with the critics. She left this book here alone, though. She considered this one done and complete. It has 50 poems in it.Overall, Millay's poetical skills continued to build. She wrote The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver in 1923 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry with it. She was 31.Millay was well celebrated for her poetry during her lifetime and has earned even greater kudos in the decades since then.I hope you enjoy this poetry as much as I do. Eliot’s poems establishes a new text of the Collected Poems 1909–1962, rectifying accidental omissions and errors that have crept in during the century since Eliot’s astonishing debut, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” In addition to the masterpieces, The Poems of T. S. Eliot contains the poems of Eliot’s youth, which were rediscovered only decades later; poems that circulated privately during his lifetime; and love poems from his final years, written for his wife, Valerie. Calling upon Eliot’s critical writings as well as his drafts, letters, and other original materials, Christopher Ricks and Jim McCue have provided a commentary that illuminates the imaginative life of each poem.
