Called "the flour of Cities all," London has long been understood through the poetry it has inspired. Now poet Mark Ford has assembled the most capacious and wide-ranging anthology of poems about London to date, from Chaucer to Wordsworth to the present day, providing a chronological tour of urban life and of English literature. Nearly all of the major poets of British literature have left some poetic record of London: Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Donne, Milton, Dryden, Pope, Johnson, Wordsworth, Keats, Byron, and T. S. Eliot. Ford goes well beyond these figures, however, to gather significant verse of all kinds, from Jacobean city comedies to nursery rhymes, from topical satire to anonymous ballads. The result is a cultural history of the city in verse, one that represents all classes of London's population over some seven centuries, mingling the high and low, the elegant and the salacious, the courtly and the street smart. Many of the poems respond to large events in the city's history--the beheading of Charles I, the Great Fire, the Blitz--but the majority reflect the quieter routines and anxieties of everyday life through the centuries. Ford's selections are arranged chronologically, thus preserving a sense of the strata of the capital's history. An introductory essay by the poet explores in detail the cultural, political, and aesthetic significance of the verse inspired by this great city. The result is a volume as rich and vibrant and diverse as London itself.

Amy Levy (1861-1889) was a British poet and novelist. Levy was born in Clapham, London into a Jewish family that was mildly observant, but as an adult she no longer practised Judaism although she continued to identify with the Jews as a people. Levy wrote stories, essays and poems for periodicals, some popular and others literary. The stories Cohen of Trinity and Wise in Their Generation, both published in Oscar Wilde's magazine Women's World, are among her best. Her final book of poems, A London Plane-Tree and Other Verse (1889), contains lyrics that are among the first to show the influence of French symbolism. Her other works include Xantippe and Other Verse (1881), The Romance of a Shop (1888), Reuben Sachs (1888) and Miss Meredith (1889).

A London Plane-Tree and Other Verse (1889) is a poetry collection by Amy Levy. Published in the year of her death at the age of 27, A London Plane-Tree and Other Verse is the work of a pioneering writer and feminist whose poetry and prose explores the concept of the New Woman while illuminating the realities of Jewish life in nineteenth century London. "Green is the plane-tree in the square, / The other trees are brown; / They droop and pine for country air; / The plane-tree loves the town." In these lyric poems exploring the sights and sounds of Victorian London, Amy Levy identifies herself with a modern, urban setting, refusing to rely on tradition in poetry or in life: "Others the country take for choice, / And hold the town in scorn; / But she has listened to the voice / On city breezes borne." Attuned to the urban bustle of work and play, Levy presages the malaise and discontent more often associated with Modernist writers of the early twentieth century: "Dead-tired, dog tired, as the vivid day / Fails and slackens and fades away.-- / The sky that was so blue before / With sudden clouds is shrouded o'er." Having struggled with depression her whole life, Levy was keenly aware of poetry's ability to capture the depths of human emotion. "To Vernon Lee," addressed to her lover, herself a famous writer, Levy provides a self-portrait in the throes of heartache, recalling with sorrow a love consigned to the past: "A snowy blackthorn flowered beyond my reach; / You broke a branch and gave it to me there; / [...] / And of the gifts the gods had given to each-- / Hope unto you, and unto me Despair." With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition Amy Levy's A London Plane-Tree and Other Verse is a classic work of British literature reimagined for modern readers.

'London, thou art the flower of cities all!' William Dunbar (1459-1513) Steeped in history, culture and traditions, London remains one of the largest and most populous cities on the planet. Small wonder then, that some of history's greatest poets have been inspired by it. This illustrated collection of classic London verse contains poetry by writers such as Thomas Hardy, D.H.Lawrence and William Wordsworth, from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. The poems praise the pageantry and history of the capital, as well as the natural beauty of its gardens, suburbs and mighty river. Yet some also express the melancholy, loneliness and alienation sometimes felt by the city's inhabitants. If you live in London or are just a visitor, you will find many poems in this book for inspiration and reflection.

Excerpt from London in a Thousand Years: With Other Poems Mr. Eugenius Roche, the author of "London in a Thousand Years," was descended from an ancient and noble family. He was a scion of the house of Fermoy, distinguished in history by its heroic conduct in, and devoted attachment to, the cause of the unfortunate Charles, - Lord Roche having contributed a large portion of his pay, obtained from a foreign service, to the support of Charles the Second when in exile; and by the ungrateful and profligate return made by that monarch for such conduct, - his benefactor's widow having been an aged and miserable beggar in the streets of Cork.
