Excerpt from The Tour of Doctor Syntax Through London, or the Pleasures and Miseries of the Metropolis: A Poem Ar 71911 the fame which the' justly celebrated Docrbn Srlg'mx has acquiied, it was not to be expected that such. A transcendent genius would confine the sphere of his o'bservations and of his future movements to the remote scenes that su1 rotind his Vicarage at Somerden 111 the vicinity. Of the Lakes. To have. Restricted that expansive mind to the contemplation of so barren a field, though the water-drinking bards of the Lakes have denominated it their poetical Elysium would have been to have locked up a precious jewel in a_ casket, and to have excited the just regrets of all who ardently desired to behold the indefatigable Doctor again bustling ln the midst of Society, land'e1, nploying his inimitable pen and pencil delineating the manners and pursuits of mankind From a spot, therefore, so little pro ductive of incident, - where the study of nature was confined to a few specimens in the persons of rhyming minstrels, peasants, country-women, and pe1iodical valetudinarian yisitants to theborders of the Meres, Doq'ron syntax was earnestly solicited to immerge into the scenes of the great world, and to, exert the'energies of his mind in depicting the pleasures and miseries on the Mnrnopoms. Among the' most powerful incitements to this undertaking which the Doctor experienced, were' it must be confessed, 'thé repeated suggestions of Mrs. Syn tax, who was herself desirous of figuring for a time amidst the gaieties of the fashionable world. With this desire'of his spouse, so natural to the panting bosoms of the country fair, the affection ate Doctor was induced at length to comply and the public are here presented, along' with the adventures and 'observations of the' celebrated Syntax, with the additional and pleasing aecom paniment of the presence, and it is to be hoped no less entertaining remarks, of his unsophisti 'elated wife. Winner of the New American Poetry Competition 1997, chosen by Bruce Andrews. The selector for the 1997 New American Poetry Competition, Bruce Andrews, writes of this exciting book of poetry: "The citya??any city, your citya??comes alive in all its maximal, flash-frame, cut 'n' paste glory in Robert Fitterman's Metropolis. Book I (1-15) launches this open-ended project, resuscitating the Long Poem tradition with a fluxy, ambient splash of border crossings, of social life way beyond the narrowly literary or the possessive lyric's 'merely personal.' Here we're 'coming down from the repro...,' with hairpin turns through a multiplicity of style, into an everyday sensory hologram, a porous yardsale of coming attractions." Robert Fitterman, with his wife, the poet Kim Rosenfield, lives and works in New York City.

Excerpt from Poems, Lyrics, Songs, and Sonnets Sir walter scott, that poetry as a staff was a pleasant companion to walk with, but perilous as a crutch to lean upon; and so I remained a man of business. At the same time I mingled freely and plea. Santly with manv of the foremost men in literature, art, and science. In some of the important movements in the metropolis, political, social, and charitable, it has been my good fortune to take an active part and in connection with several of them my name is still united. Excerpt from The Might of Manhattan: And Other Poems OW mighty is the forest oak whose span Broad centuries of steady growth uprear! But mightier are the towering works of man Wrought in the narrow compass of a year, And mightiest on Manhattan they appear To grace this wonder isle, - this throbbing mart, Which drains the pulses of a hemisphere To claim the best that Wealth and Skill impart And lift a lofty skyline, radiant with Art.
