A Paradise of Poets is Jerome Rothenberg's tenth book of poetry to be published by New Directions, beginning with his Poland/1931(1974). In considering the title of his newest collection, he says: "Writing poetry for me has always included an involvement with the life of poetry--& through that life an intensification, when it happened, of my involvement with the other life around me. In an earlier poem I spoke of this creating a paradise of poets ... I do not of course believe that such a paradise exists in any supernatural or mystical sense, but I have sometimes felt it come to life among my fellow poets and, even more, in writing--in the body of the poem." In Rothenberg's hands, the body of the poem is an extraordinarily malleable object. Collage, translation, even visual improvisation serve to open up his latest book to the presence of poets and artists he has known and to others, past and present, who he feels have somehow touched him, among them Nakahara Chuya, Jackson Mac Low, Pablo Picasso, Leonardo da Vinci, Federico Garcia Lorca, Kurt Schwitters, and Vitezslav Nezval. Kenneth Rexroth once commented: "Jerome Rothenberg is one of our truly great American poets who has returned U.S. poetry to the mainstream of international modern literature. No one has dug deeper into the roots of poetry." With A Paradise of Poets, it is clear that this evaluation is as fresh today as it was twenty-five years ago.

Widely considered the greatest and most influential of the English Romantic poets, William Wordsworth (1770-1850) remains today among the most admired and studied of all English writers. He is best remembered for the poems he wrote between 1798 and 1806, the period most fully represented in this selection of 39 of his most highly regarded works. Among them are poems from the revolutionary Lyrical Ballads of 1798, including the well-known "Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abby"; the famous "Lucy" series of 1799; the political and social commentaries of 1802; the moving "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"; and the great "Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood"--all reprinted from an authoritative edition. Republication of a selection of 39 poems reprinted from The Complete Poetical Works of William Wordsworth: Student's Cambridge Edition, published by the Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston (The Riverside Press, Cambridge), 1904. "We never meet; yet we meet day by day, Upon those hills of life, dim and immense: The good we love, and sleep—our innocence. O hills of life, high hills! And higher than they, Our guardian spirits meet at prayer and play. Beyond pain, joy, and hope, and long suspense, Above the summits of our souls, far hence, An angel meets an angel on the way." The novel "Poems" is a collection of poems by the British writer, editor, critic, and poet Alice Meynell. Themes include romance, nature, seasons and grief.

Excerpt from Poems in Process The material for this study of poetic composition and revision is vast and various. Of first importance are the worksheets or early drafts of poems, cherished by libraries. The most exciting of these from the major poets of the past have been frequently examined by scholars, either for special studies or for definitive texts of the poet's work, and these schol arly findings are drawn on freely. Many manuscripts have been scruti nized anew, some reported on for the first time. There are also the letters and diaries of poets and their relatives and friends, which often reveal the exact circumstances of a poem's composition as well as the habitual practices of the poet as writer. Since not all of such personal accounts are reliable, their probable veracity has always been carefully weighed in the hope of presenting the maximum of genuine evidence. There is the work of biographers who have used this type of material to give valid sketches of the poet at work. Finally, if a man has lived through various editions of his poems, the several texts will show his manner of revising - should he, after original publication, still care to revise.
