Desde Aristóteles a Erich Auerbach y Terry Eagleton, pasando por los formalistas rusos; desde Gustave Flaubert y Franz Kafka a Julio Cortázar y Roberto Arlt, entre otros, este libro se pregunta por la ficción, los géneros, la mímesis, el realismo, el canon, la verosimilitud, la historia literaria y la crítica. Como lo sintetiza el propio De Diego en su prólogo: "' Enseñar literatura—decía un recordado profesor— más que transmitir un saber es contagiar una pasión.' Ojalá este libro logre ese objetivo."
