Este trabajo es el resultado de una investigación, de carácter histórico, literario y documental, que ha tenido como objetivo recoger, seleccionar, documentar y estudiar todo el material disponible de y sobre la literatura infantil y juvenil que los españoles crearon en el exilio mexicano, tanto lo que respecta a las obras originales como lo referente al campo de las aportaciones críticas y teóricas. Hemos explorado no sólo la creación literaria sino también la labor de ilustradores, editores, impresores y maestros exiliados, destacando las implicaciones sociológicas y educativas de aquel exilio y la importancia de una tradición literaria que en muchos casos era continuación de la que se estaba haciendo en España antes del inicio de la Guerra Civil. Con la lectura de las páginas de este estudio se podrá comprobar la vitalidad de la literatura infantil y juvenil que los españoles crearon durante el exilio en México y la importancia que le concedía la comunidad exiliada, no sólo como medio de entretenimiento sino también como medio de educación y mantenimiento de una tradición literaria y plástica rota por la guerra. No olvidemos, además, que a México llegaron muchos niños, solos o con sus familias, que formaban un público abundante para esas obras. Sin olvidar, claro está, que tales aportaciones sirvieron, con su influencia, para renovar y dar —en un marco de reciprocidad, ya que también los autores españoles recibieron la influencia de la tradición autóctona mexicana— nuevos aires a la tradición literaria infantil propia de México.

Jorge Guillén is one of Spain's most important and productive poets of the twentieth century; yet though recently honored with prestigious literary prizes in Spain, Italy, and the United States, he remains little known in this country. This selection of his poetry and his commentary on the poems comprise an extraordinary introduction of the poet to an English-speaking audience. Ranging over the nearly sixty years of Guillén's poetic career, this anthology consists of the poet's own selection of forty-one poems that represent for him the coherence and unity of his life's work. His commentary on each poem explains its place and significance in this context. With the original Spanish and the English translations on facing pages, the anthology proceeds thematically. The poet asks us to consider the architecture of his work as a whole, and not necessarily his development as a poet.
