Poesia d'oggi e d'altri tempi è una raccolta di poesie di Gianfranco Mento che ricopre un intero ventennio (2001 - 2021). I componimenti sono suddivisi in raccolte di circa quindici poesie, come fossero degli album, e i temi trattati sono tra i più vari, incluse nuove forme poetiche, quali Poesia d'arredamento, Poesie in rima stretta, ed Esordio Siculo, in dialetto siciliano. L'intento è quello di ridare spazio alla musicalità della metrica, verso una lirica poetica in cui viene accentuato il valore evocativo della parola, tramite un linguaggio attuale e temi quotidiani. E proprio da qui il titolo generale della raccolta, che nella forma e nel contenuto ricorda talvolta le elegie classiche, gli endecasillabi del dolce stil novo, talvolta gli idilli della poesia romantica. Altrove sono presenti influenze di decadentismo, di ermetismo, e di nuove e inedite forme poetiche.

Tra il 1958 e il 1959 Giacomo Debenedetti tiene l’ultimo ciclo di lezioni dedicate alla poesia italiana presso l’Università di Roma. È un corso fondamentale per la critica letteraria del Novecento, in cui Debenedetti traccia i confini di una nuova mappa della scrittura in versi, un canone appassionato e rivoluzionario che per la prima volta riconosce le influenze internazionali e le voci “irregolari” che erano state fino ad allora trascurate. Il racconto di Debenedetti scava nelle origini dei poeti ermetici (Montale, Ungaretti, Luzi), riscopre Campana e Govoni, segue le forme del linguaggio di Saba e Penna, il ruolo della storia in Sereni, individua i modelli francesi, da Mallarmé ad Aragon, che hanno formato una nuova generazione di autori. Soprattutto, rifiutando il modello ormai superato dei poeti laureati che ispirano una letteratura nazionale, riporta la parola poetica alla sua dimensione narrativa, analizza e confronta i versi, le scelte stilistiche, le immagini, con uno sguardo di straordinaria modernità che resta una lezione per il futuro. “La scrittura critica di Giacomo Debenedetti affascina subito perché in essa coesistono gli elementi di una conversazione – divagante, frammentaria e sproporzionata – e gli elementi – contrari – di un racconto ben costruito in cui la trama e la ‘suspense’ hanno per protagonisti i ‘motivi stilistici’ in divenire drammatico.
