Muitas vezes tenho jurado a mim mesmo que nunca mais vou escrever coisa alguma. E assim o faço por longo tempo. Mas a poesia é tão insistente, tão humana e faz tanto bem à minha alma, que não resisto e de novo entrego-me a ela por inteiro, num amor sem medida. Confesso que me dá um prazer muito grande participar da vida cultural de minha cidade. Compartilhar com os estudantes e os leitores de minha comunidade um pouco da cultura que a duras penas adquiri. É muito bom poder colaborar, contribuir com a cultura de meu povo. Eu vim do povo, aprendi o que sei com o povo e escrevo para o povo. Nada melhor, portanto, que este mesmo povo para avaliar o meu trabalho. Aprendi na escola do mundo que o homem tem que doar sempre. Doar até mais nada receber, ou seja, doar por toda vida. Tenho procurado seguir este ensinamento do homem simples, do matuto, do sertanejo, do ribeirinho, que na sua longa experiência de vida nos dá um show de como viver em comunidade. Tenho buscado aprimorar o meu coração, o meu entendimento. Tenho implorado ao Senhor, para que me dê sabedoria, me dê a luz lá do alto, para que eu possa saciar a minha sede de saber e assim falar melhor à alma do homem simples, meu irmão e meu companheiro de jornada. Por isso fico tão feliz ao entregar-lhes este livro que é parte minha, fruto de longa meditação, extraído do barro, do ar, da água, do cheiro do cedro, do abstrato, do sonho... Observe que ele tem a essência do orvalho, do capim, do boi, da garapa curtida, do açúcar de engenho, da moça branca, da gabiroba, da pitanga, do gravatá. Este livro é também parte sua, meu irmão simples, meu companheiro, meu amigo de fé... Ele tem seu suor, sua luta e sua força. Aproprie-se dele. Toma. É seu.
