Prima opera certa di Dante, la Vita nuova (1292-93) alterna liriche tra le più belle e note del poeta – «Tanto gentile e tanto onesta pare», «Donne ch’avete intelletto d’amore» – a capitoli in prosa, cui è affidata la duplice funzione di delineare l’itinerario autobiografico dal quale sono nati i versi e di commentarli. Al centro del libello giovanile è un’esperienza d’amore idealizzata, quella che lega Dante a Beatrice: dalla narrazione dei loro incontri si dipana la rievocazione agiografica della «donna gentile» che è anche intimo memoriale, dapprima profano e «cortese», poi sempre più pervaso di misticismo, finché la morte di Beatrice trasforma l’amore terreno in amore assoluto e l’amata in mezzo di elevazione e di rinnovamento spirituale, affettivo e poetico.
