Religious poetry has often been regarded as minor poetry and dismissed in large part because poetry is taken to require direct experience; whereas religious poetry is taken to be based on faith, that is, on second or third hand experience. The best methods of thinking about "experience" are given to us by phenomenology. Poetry and Revelation is the first study of religious poetry through a phenomenological lens, one that works with the distinction between manifestation (in which everything is made manifest) and revelation (in which the mystery is re-veiled as well as revealed). Dwayne Redmond was born in Greenwood, a small town in Mississippi. Though he always enjoyed writing poetry, he never took it seriously until his oldest sister, Thelma, sent him an article about a poetry contest given by the National Library of Poetry. He entered it, and his first poem, "May," was published in the early 1990s. He also had his own successful television show in 1994 called "Poetry in Motion," which promoted poetry, anti-drug messages, and black history. After publishing four more poems, he decided to write his own book, which he feels has been a blessing to publish.
