This collection of deeply felt and powerfully moving Haitian poetry dating back to the first decades of the Caribbean island’s independence from French colonial rule sheds a much needed light on an important and often neglected period in Haiti’s literary history. Editors Kadish and Jenson have made a significant corpus of largely unknown poetry accessible to a wide audience for the first time with this essential bilingual volume of early-nineteenth-century verse that celebrates the authors’ African origins, freedom from oppression, equality for all, and the legitimacy of the only modern country born from a slave revolt.

The Haitian Revolution has generated responses from commentators in fields ranging from philosophy to historiography to twentieth-century literary and artistic studies. But what about the written work produced at the time, by Haitians? This book is the first to present an account of a specifically Haitian literary tradition in the Revolutionary era. Beyond the Slave Narrative shows the emergence of two strands of textual innovation, both evolving from the new revolutionary consciousness: the remarkable political texts produced by Haitian revolutionary leaders Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines, and popular Creole poetry from anonymous courtesans in Saint-Domingue's libertine culture. These textual forms, though they differ from each other, both demonstrate the increasing cultural autonomy and literary voice of non-white populations in the colony at the time of revolution. Unschooled generals and courtesans, long presented as voiceless, are at last revealed to be legitimate speakers and authors. These Haitian French and Creole texts have been neglected as a foundation of Afro-diasporic literature by former slaves in the Atlantic world for two reasons: because they do not fit the generic criteria of the slave narrative (which is rooted in the autobiographical experience of enslavement); and because they are mediated texts, relayed to the print-cultural Atlantic domain not by the speakers themselves, but by secretaries or refugee colonists. These texts challenge how we think about authorial voice, writing, print culture, and cultural autonomy in the context of the formerly enslaved, and demand that we reassess our historical understanding of the Haitian Independence and its relationship to an international world of contemporary readers.

Three plays by the Nobel-laureate Derek Walcott, brought together for the first time in The Haitian Trilogy In the history plays that comprise The Haitian Trilogy--Henri Christophe, Drums and Colours and The Haytian Earth--Derek Walcott, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, uses verse to tell the story of his native West Indies as a four-hundred-year cycle of war, conquest and rebellion. In Henri Christophe and The Haytian Earth, Walcott re-casts the legacy of Haiti's violent revolutionaries--led by Toussaint L'Ouverture, Jean Jacques Dessalines and Henri Christophe--whose rebellion established the first black state in the Americas, but whose cruelty becomes a parable of racial pride and corruption. Drums and Colours, commissioned in 1958 to celebrate the first parliament in Trinidad, is a grand pageant linking the lives of complex, ambiguous heroes: Columbus and Raleigh; Toussaint; and George William Gordon, a martyr of the constitutional era. From Henri Christophe's high style to the bracing vernacular of The Haytian Earth, to the epic scale and scope of Drums and Colours, in these plays Walcott, one of our most celebrated poets, carved a place in the modern theater for the history of the West Indies, and a sounding room for his own maturing voice.

This is a book that unfolds the history of the world’s first black republic through the art of poetry. Yes, the first black republic on Earth started in the Americas! Beautiful Agony is a collection of poetic snapshots of the heroes and heroines who made Haiti possible as a nation and trekked the eternal struggle to keep Haiti’s freedom soul. Do you love poetry? Do you love wordplay? Do you love sophisticated prose? Then Beautiful Agony: Visionaries and Freedom Fighters in Haitian History is for you. These poems serve a double mission: personal pleasure and historical recognition of people and a land and the impressive odds against its existence and the triumphant glow of its survival. When Haiti came into existence, the fight was an extremely difficult one, and Haiti’s enemies were the world’s greatest powers at that time. The improbable but hard-won victory of the slaves against France’s powerful Napoleon and his cohorts was an extraordinary achievement for my little island. This book is for everyone who loves freedom, whether poet lovers, teachers, social workers, ministers, scholars, activists, lawyers, politicians, musicians, psychologists, youth, or parents. It will give you hope that nothing is impossible after witnessing the experience of the improbable hunger and spirit of those who were forced into existence a new nation of former slaves and free blacks. Beautiful Agony is a testament to the creative will and humanity of Haiti’s freedom and agony.

The articles and documents in this pamphlet were printed in The Nation during the summer of 1920. They revealed for the first time to the world the nature of the United States' imperialistic venture in Haiti. While; owing to the censorship; the full story of this fundamental departure from American traditions has not yet been told; it appears at the time of this writing; October; 1920; that "pitiless publicity" for our sandbagging of a friendly and inoffensive neighbor has been achieved. The report of Major-General George Barnett; commandant of the Marine Corps during the first four years of the Haitian occupation; just issued; strikingly confirms the facts set forth by The Nation and refutes the denials of administration officials and their newspaper apologists. It is in the hope that by spreading broadly the truth about what has happened in Haiti under five years of American occupation The Nation may further contribute toward removing a dark blot from the American escutcheon; that this pamphlet is issued.
