Though best remembered as one of the foremost Victorian realists who created classic works of fiction like Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure, Thomas Hardy always considered himself to be more a poet than a novelist at heart. Over time, critics and fans alike have warmed to Hardy's verse, and his influence has been cited by several acclaimed contemporary poets, including Philip Larkin. This poetry collection brings together some of Hardy's most accomplished works.

This book consists of a number of introductory studies of the major French poets from Villon's time until to-day. It is a series of essays in characterization, defining the diverse impressions these poets are likely to make on a modern reader of ordinary sensibility. It is not a history of five centuries of French poetry, and it neither compares great poets to one another, nor describes the schools to which they belonged or the poetic doctrines they espoused. It is about introducing a reader who appreciates poetry to a variety of French poets who--thanks to their beautiful verses and highly interesting lives--might join the ranks of those greatly appreciated by readers.

The Lyric Now written by James Longenbach and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-07 with Literary Criticism categories.

A poet and scholar explores how lyric poetry works by examining the lives and works of thirteen twentieth- and twenty-first–century American poets and musicians. For more than a century, American poets have heeded the siren song of Ezra Pound’s make it new, staking a claim for the next poem on the supposed obsolescence of the last. But great poems are forever rehearsing their own present, inviting readers into a nowness that makes itself new each time we read or reread them. They create the present moment as we enter it, their language relying on the long history of lyric poetry while at the same time creating a feeling of unprecedented experience. In poet and critic James Longenbach’s title, the word “now” does double duty, evoking both a lyric sense of the present and twentieth-century writers’ assertion of “nowness” as they crafted their poetry in the wake of Modernism. Longenbach examines the fruitfulness of poetic repetition and indecision, of naming and renaming, and of the evolving search for newness in the construction, history, and life of lyrics. Looking to the work of thirteen poets, from Marianne Moore and T. S. Eliot through George Oppen and Jorie Graham to Carl Phillips and Sally Keith, and several musicians, including Virgil Thomson and Patti Smith, he shows how immediacy is constructed through language. Longenbach also considers the life and times of these poets, taking a close look at the syntax and diction of poetry, and offers an original look at the nowness of lyrics. Praise for The Lyric Now “Longenbach is a lyric poet, practical critic, and literary scholar. These are distinct roles, and there are vanishingly few people good, let alone so distinguished, in all three. In The Lyric Now, he brings a career’s worth of wisdom to bear while writing with élan and urgency for both the specialist and nonspecialist reader. No one is better at explaining how poems work, how literary history happens, and why we should care about both.” —Langdon Hammer, author of James Merrill: Life and Art “[Longenbach] does prove—with stylistic wit and epigrammatic verve—that close reading can be a literary art in its own right. . . . Taken together, these essays . . . make an implicit case for the importance of syntax to lyric poetry. This is particularly evident in Longenbach’s reading of Moore’s “The Octopus,” and in masterful readings of poems by Jorie Graham and Carl Philips. When he contrasts Patti Smith’s prose and John Ashbery’s poetry with the songs of Bob Dylan, his skill as an expert close reader proves his point about the power of syntax. This volume proves a simple yet fundamental truth: “a lyric works particularly, sentence by sentence, line by line”. . . . Summing Up: Highly recommended.” —Choice

Excerpt from A Poetry-Book of Modern Poets: Consisting of Songs and Sonnets, Odes and Lyrics, Selected and Arranged With Notes, From the Works of the Modern English and American Poets, Dating From the Middle of the Eighteenth Century to the Present Time Touching the general contents of this volume, it will be easily understood that the duty of levying con tributions from the works of living authors must have largely added to the difficulty of the task. Herein, however, the Editor has endeavoured to be as little as possible biassed by merely personal taste, and as far as possible guided by contemporary and popular ver dict. For the rest, the whole field of modern English Poetry has been surveyed and gleaned to fill the fol lowing pages. No famous name will, it is believed, be found unrepresented; and some few names which are less known than they deserve to be (as, for instance, that of Thomas Lovell Beddoes) will here be met with for almost the first time in a work of this character. Certain American poets with whom, to our loss, we are but too slightly acquainted, have also received due recognition. It is, indeed, difficult to see how any selection that includes writers still living can be deemed complete without them. Excerpt from The Family Library of British Poetry: From Chaucer to the Present Time, (1350-1878) The Editors intended to give here a general sketch of British poetry but as a companion volume, The Family Library of British Prose, is soon to accompany the present work, they have concluded to reserve for that volume a general view of the literature of Britain, in cluding its prose as well as poetical writers. It will be seen that this method has the advan tage of enabling the Editors to give a more symmetrical view of the different periods of British literature. The age of Elizabeth re quires Hooker and Bacon as much as Spenser, and nearly as much as Shakespeare; in the age of Charles II. (leaving out Milton, ) the two great imaginative minds are Bunyan and Jeremy Taylor; in the period between 1740 and 1790 no poet, in respect to imperial and prodigal genius, can be compared with Burke and among the poets of the present century, the large majority are eminent as prose-writers as 'well as poets. The examples of Scott, Cole ridge, Southey, and Moore will at once recur to every mind. The Editors for these reasons have decided to postpone their general sketch of the literature of Britain, and present it in the forthcoming Family Library of British Prose.
