Abstract: Kansainvälinen tavoite hidastaa ja jopa pysäyttää luonnon monimuotoisuuden väheneminen maapallolla vuoteen 2010 on sisällytetty Pohjoismaiden ministerineuvoston ympäristöyhteistyön toimintaohjelmaan vuosille 2009-2012. Tiedämme jo nyt, ettei tuota tavoitetta saavuteta, vaikka tavoitteen saavuttamiseksi on Pohjoismaissa tehty lukuisia pieniä ja suuria tekoja, jotka ovat edistäneet luonnon monimuotoisuuden säilymistä ja suojelua. Tavoitevuonna 2010 vietetään YK:n kansainvälistä luonnon monimuotoisuuden vuotta, jonka aikana muotoillaan uudet tavoitteet ja painotetaan luonnon monimuotoisuuden tärkeyttä luonnolle ja ihmisille. Työ luonnon monimuotoisuuden säilyttämiseksi jatkuu -vuoden 2010 jälkeenkin. Pohjoismaiden luonto - kohti vuotta 2010 -projekti esitteli esimerkein pohjoismaisia monimuotoisuuden säilyttämisen uhkia ja menestystarinoita, mutta myös pyrkimyksiä, jotka eivät aina toteutuneetkaan halutulla tavalla. Tarinat julkaistiin sähköisin tietolehtisin projektin kotisivuilla kaikilla pohjoismaisilla kielillä ja englanniksi. Julkaistut tietolehtiset ja yhteenveto luonnon monimuotoisuuden kehityskuluista ja tilasta Pohjoismaissa on koottu tähän julkaisuun, joka on osa Pohjoismaiden panosta 2010-tavoitteen saavuttamiseksi ja tietoisuuden lisäämiseksi luonnon monimuotoisuuden merkityksestä

The international target to slow and even halt the decline in biodiversity by the end of 2010 has been included in the Nordic Council of Ministers' Environmental Action Plan for 2009-2012. We already know that this goal will not be reached, in spite of the many actions big and small taken around the Nordic Region to help preserve and protect biodiversity. During the UN International Year of Biodiversity 2010 new goals will be defined and campaigns will be conducted to emphasise the importance of biodiversity to nature and people. The task of conserving biodiversity will also continue after the theme year 2010. The project Nordic nature - trends towards 2010 has presented examples illustrating the threats facing biodiversity together with conservation success stories, and also descriptions of conservation efforts that have not always produced the desired results. These reviews have been published as fact sheets in electronic format on the project's websites in all of the Nordic languages and in English. This publication compiles these published fact sheets, together with a summary of current trends in biodiversity in the Nordic Countries, as part of our region's contribution towards the 2010 biodiversity target and the goal of increasing awareness of the special significance of biodiversity.

Suuret ikäluokat tulivat eläkeikään ja se näkyi ja kuului kaikessa. Virtuaalikulttuuri ja sosiaalinen media - populismi politiikassa, olivat osa samaa ilmiötä. Sota Afganistanissa päättyi, mutta jatkui muualla. Turkki siirtyi vahvan Erdoganin johtoon ja Yhdysvallat sai itsensä näköisen presidentin. Kiina ja Venäjä ohittivat monessa kriisiytyvän Euroopan, Ukraina jäädytti myös omia suhteitamme itään ja britit alkoivat pitkän tiensä ulos EU:sta. Arabikevät puhututti ja islamistinen talvi. Tiede eteni ja Higgsin kenttä sekä mustat aukot tulivat tutuiksi nekin. Elokuvista, musiikista ja kulttuurista löytyi nimi myös kirjalle. Menetetty maa sai neljä Oscaria samaan aikaan kun Ruotsin Akatemia törmäsi monelle yhteiseen skandaaliin. Kirjallisuuden Nobel jäi jakamatta ja seuraavana vuonna sen sai kaksi kirjailijaa. Heistä itävaltalaisen Peter Handken tyyli sopii oikein hyvin kuluneen vuosikymmenen kuvaajaksi alkaen kirjasta Suuri putous. Nature has been a key attraction factor for tourism in the Nordic countries for decades.
