A presente obra realiza uma abordagem crítica acerca do filme Barravento, 1962, de Glauber Rocha, enfocando a questão religiosa do mesmo, mas sem perder de vista as questões políticas que o envolve. No que diz respeito à narrativa fílmica o autor busca refletir sobre como o fenômeno religioso interfere na política e no engajamento dos cidadãos em relação a determinadas causas. Além disso, é realizado também um estudo sobre o cineasta Glauber Rocha, visando compreender suas motivações e influências. Que mundo Barravento retrata nas telas? Quais relações estão presentes neste mundo? Qual a perspectiva religiosa que o filme traz? A religião impede as pessoas de fazerem a sua própria história? Qual proposta de mudança do status quo o filme traz? Partindo da premissa do filme de que “a religião é o ópio do povo”, o autor envereda por discussões complexas, já que o filme pode ser interpretado tanto pelo viés religioso quanto pelo viés marxista. Assim sendo, o autor recorre ao marxismo, à teologia da libertação, ao Candomblé e outros assuntos, com o intuito de dar conta da complexidade das discussões que a obra aborda.

Este livro busca refletir sobre a forma como a linguagem cinematográfica permite, através de uma articulação entre valores estéticos e ideológicos, tanto representar uma determinada sociedade como construir e/ou consolidar uma memória a respeito dos mais diversos grupos sociais presentes naquele microcosmo. Dentro desta perspectiva, serão analisadas algumas obras produzidas no Brasil entre os anos de 1960 e 1964, identificadas dentro de um movimento cinematográfico moderno e de contestação, intitulado e reconhecido por seus idealizadores como "Cinema Novo". Assim, os filmes serão debatidos em seus universos simbólicos, buscando identificar a forma como o tema da marginalidade social permeou esta primeira fase do movimento e de que maneira estas películas tentaram construir, através de suas narrativas, uma representação do Brasil naquele contexto histórico. " 'A camera in the hand and ideas in the head' was the primary axiom of the young originators of Brazil's Cinema Novo. This movement of the 1960s and early 1970s overcame technical constraints and produced films on minimal budgets. In Allegories of Underdevelopment, Ismail Xavier examines a number of these films, arguing that they served to represent a nation undergoing a political and social transformation into modernity. Its best-known voice, filmmaker Glauber Rocha claimed that Cinema Novo was driven by an "aesthetics of hunger." This scarcity of means demanded new cinematic approaches that eventually gave rise to a legitimate and unique Third World cinema.
