Discusses the deterioration of Polish-Jewish relations after the Soviet annexation of Poland's north-eastern territories on 17 September 1939. The research is based on examination of Polish, Jewish, and Soviet documents and testimonies concerning ca. 80 small localities and towns. Underlines the general tendency of each group to see the members of other ethnic or religious groups in a stereotypical way. Poles, already in the interwar period, accused the Jews of being a "Żydokomuna". Even if the number of Jews who manifested joy at the Soviets' entrance was not large (it differed in various localities) the tendency of Poles was to believe that all Jews welcomed the Soviets. The Jews were perceived as traitors. Recalls the fighting of Jewish and Belorussian armed troops against the Polish Army and Polish authorities in order to help the Red Army on 17-19 September. In the eyes of Jews, all Poles were antisemites; this stereotype was a reaction to the "Żydokomuna" stereotype. Another issue was the total change of social roles of Poles and Jews. Under Soviet rule the Jews could get jobs they never had before. The Polish elite were in a very difficult situation. The attitudes of Poles and Jews were also influenced by the policy of the Soviets, who at the beginning of the war favored Jews and Belorussians over Poles.

When Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939, it aimed to destroy Polish national consciousness. As a symbol of Polish national identity and the religious faith of approximately two-thirds of Poland's population, the Roman Catholic Church was an obvious target of the Nazi regime's policies of ethnic, racial, and cultural Germanization. Jonathan Huener reveals in The Polish Catholic Church under German Occupation that the persecution of the church was most severe in the Reichsgau Wartheland, a region of Poland annexed to Nazi Germany. Here Catholics witnessed the execution of priests, the incarceration of hundreds of clergymen and nuns in prisons and concentration camps, the closure of churches, the destruction and confiscation of church property, and countless restrictions on public expression of the Catholic faith. This book concerns building an idealized image of the society in which the Holocaust occurred. It inspects the category of the bystander (in Polish culture closely related to the witness), since the war recognized as the axis of self-presentation and majority politics of memory. The category is of performative character since it defines the roles of event participants, assumes passivity of the non-Jewish environment, and alienates the exterminated, thus making it impossible to speak about the bystanders’ violence at the border between the ghetto and the ‘Aryan’ side. Bystanders were neither passive nor distanced; rather, they participated and played important roles in Nazi plans. Starting with the war, the authors analyze the functions of this category in the Polish discourse of memory through following its changing forms and showing links with social practices organizing the collective memory. Despite being often critiqued, this point of dispute about Polish memory rarely belongs to mainstream culture. It also blocks the memory of Polish violence against Jews. The book is intended for students and researchers interested in memory studies, the history of the Holocaust, the memory of genocide, and the war and postwar cultures of Poland and Eastern Europe.

In an age of information and new media the relationships between remembering and forgetting have changed. This volume addresses the tension between loud and often spectacular histories and those forgotten pasts we strain to hear. Employing social and cultural analysis, the essays within examine mnemonic technologies both new and old, and cover subjects as diverse as U.S. internment camps for Japanese Americans in WWII, the Canadian Indian Residential School system, Israeli memorial videos, and the desaparecidos in Argentina. Through these cases, the contributors argue for a re-interpretation of Guy Debord's notion of the spectacle as a conceptual apparatus through which to examine the contemporary landscape of social memory, arguing that the concept of spectacle might be developed in an age seen as dissatisfied with the present, nervous about the future, and obsessed with the past. Perhaps now "spectacle" can be thought of not as a tool of distraction employed solely by hegemonic powers, but instead as a device used to answer Walter Benjamin's plea to "explode the continuum of history" and bring our attention to now-time.
