Recollections Of The End Of An Era written by Jerzy Einhorn and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-04 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Jerzy Einhorn was born the year that Poland gained independence after 123 years of partition and occupation by Austria, Germany and Russia. This was a happy time in Poland's troubled history and the author recalls the activities and friendships of a carefree childhood. As the years pass, dark clouds appear on Poland's western border. Jerzy enters a military academy and, two years later, on the eve of the German invasion, he is called up for active duty in the 78th Light Horse Artillery. Following the Battle of Warsaw in September 1939, the young lieutenant becomes a member of the AK (underground Home Army) where he works in counter-intelligence. In spite of his Jewish origins, he survives the occupation and, in 1944, fights in the Warsaw Uprising. Jerzy Einhorn relates his many experiences, some personal and some involving great risk and courage, during the tumultous years of World War II, a war which brought to an end a period of peace and liberty for all Poles.

The first authoritative, comprehensive historical dictionary of Poland in English, this volume includes over 2,000 entries on people, events, places, and terms important to Poland's history from 966 to 1945. Entries include English and Polish language bibliographic sources. The student of Polish history seeking specific information on a person or event in medieval times, the troubled era leading to the late 18th century partitions of Poland, and the Polish nationalist struggles before 1919, reborn Poland in the interwar years, or the trauma of World War II will be amply rewarded by the accurate, concise information provided in this unique historical dictionary. Each of the alphabetically arranged entries is followed by pertinent bibliographic sources in both English and Polish languages. A list of abbreviations, a note on the Polish alphabet, and a series of historical maps precede the entries. Helpful cross-references are provided throughout the text and in the index. A general bibliography precedes the index. After five years of work, George Lerski completed the original manuscript in 1992, shortly before his untimely death. The special editing subsequently undertaken preparatory to publication has remained faithful to the original work, its concept, organization, and purpose.

Surprisingly little known, the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-20 was to change the course of twentieth-century history. In White Eagle, Red Star, Norman Davies gives a full account of the War, with its dramatic climax in August 1920 when the Red Army - sure of victory and pledged to carry the Revolution across Europe to 'water our horses on the Rhine' - was crushed by a devastating Polish attack. Since known as the 'miracle on the Vistula', it remains one of the most decisive battles of the Western world. Drawing on both Polish and Russian sources, Norman Davies illustrates the narrative with documentary material which hitherto has not been readily available and shows how the War was far more an 'episode' in East European affairs, but largely determined the course of European history for the next twenty years or more.

In 1917 Poland was recognised as a state by Russia, but the Bolshevik coup threatened this. The Polish leader Marshal Pilsudski hurried to build an army around Polish World War I veterans, and in 1918 war broke out for Poland's independence, involving the the Poles, the Red and White Russian armies, at least two different Ukrainian forces, and Allied intervention troops. The armies that fought these campaigns were extraordinarily varied in their uniforms and insignia, equipment and weapons, and when peace was signed in 1921, Poland had achieved recognised nationhood for the first time since 1794. Featuring specially commissioned full-colour artwork, this engaging study explains and illustrates the armies that fought in the epic struggle for the rebirth of the independent Polish nation, in the bitter aftermath of World War I.
