Understanding the politics of security in city-regions is increasingly important for the study of contemporary policing. This book argues that national and international governing arrangements are being outflanked by various transnational threats, including the cross-border terrorism of the attacks on Paris in 2015 and Brussels in 2016; trafficking in people, narcotics and armaments; cybercrime; the deregulation of global financial services; and environmental crime. Metropolises are the focal points of the transnational networks through which policing problems are exported and imported across national borders, as they provide much of the demand for illicit markets and are the principal engines generating other policing challenges including political protest and civil unrest. This edited collection examines whether and how governing arrangements rooted in older systems of national sovereignty are adapting to these transnational challenges, and considers problems of and for policing in city-regions in the European Union and its single market. Bringing together experts from across the continent, Policing European Metropolises develops a sociology of urban policing in Europe and a unique methodology for comparing the experiences of different metropolises in the same country. This book will be of value to police researchers in Europe and abroad, as well as postgraduate students with an interest in policing and urban policy.

In this remarkable special issue of the European Journal of Policing Studies (IJPS), contributors analyze the plural policing constellations and complexes in five European metropolises: Berlin, Sofia, London, Paris, and Barcelona. The central question in all analyzed cases is: to what extent is a local police force still present in European metropolises and how is this reality linked with other actors in the security field? Developments in European police co-operation have become sharply focused in the last few years. ccPolicing Europe critically examines the historical development of forms of co-operation and their traditional justifications: terrorism, illegal immigration, drug trafficking and other cross-border crime. It is argued that a full understanding of the new policing of Europe needs to take account of the linking of such justifications with the more diffuse debate around removal of border controls and free movement of people. The book suggests that a new European policework is emerging, and examines the implications of this phenomenon.

The 'city' as an object of criminological research mainly focuses on certain districts or neighborhoods. Although 'ecological criminology' is a well-known research field, empirical research concerning the mutual effects of policing strategies and the urban society is scarce. Since a city is a place where people encounter a variety of social processes, the need for more empirical research is apparent. In this book, scholars - from different EU Member States, Norway, and South Africa - focus on the social changes, the problems police are confronted with, and the involvement of other public and private police actors. The book takes a close look at several countries to find out to what extent and how security issues are dealt with. It focuses particularly on the discourse and the practice of police and other security actors involved in 'policing in the city' and on the geographical characteristics of policing security.

Little is known about those at the command end of policing in Europe. Over the last two years, Bryn Caless and Steve Tong have had unique access to those at the top of Europe's police forces, obtaining detailed comments from more than a hundred strategic police leaders in 22 countries and presenting, for the first time, information about how they are selected for high office, how they are held to account and what their views are on current and future challenges in policing. Building on research conducted in the UK, this is a timely and unparalleled insight into a little-known elite in the law-enforcement world.

Higher Education And Police written by Colin Rogers and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-14 with Social Science categories.

This edited collection is concerned with the ideas, challenges, demands and framework of conditions behind police education from an international perspective. Whilst not directly concerned with a classical comparison of education concepts from different countries, the broad range of international contributors consider issues such as professionalization programmes, how higher education programmes influence police organizations, as well how higher education influences police practice in a global context. Examining a wide array of countries from Germany to China and Brazil to show the flawed nature of an education system based purely upon an approach concerned with police officer numbers, the editors of this book argue for the need for greater scientific education among police around the world to meet contemporary developments. A timely and well-informed study, this book meets a crucial gap in the literature and will serve as an important contribution to existing work on policing, crime prevention, and theoretical criminology.
