The market changes faster than marketing. In essence, marketing strategy has undergone only two eras, the entity era and the bit era, also known as the industrial age and the digital age. In the age of digital society, all CEOs, CMOs and senior marketing executives must consider how to change their strategies, improve the role of marketing and adopt emerging technological and data tools to integrate with the Internet. The goal of digital marketing strategy is not to disrupt existing marketing strategies, but to complement, integrate and develop the two at the same time.In this book, the authors provide detailed discussion and practical analysis on the relationship between marketing and digital technologies and propose a marketing implementation framework for digital strategy platforms. Standing for Recognize, Reach, Relationship and Return, the 4R system is a powerful strategic trading tool for digital implementation, especially for CEOs and CMOs. All other tools, such as data platforms, content marketing, DSP digital advertising and digital marketing ROI design essentially serve the 4R system. As such, the authors advocate for firms to restructure their digital marketing strategy around the 4R system.

Advancement of the state of scholarship on media management is a three-pronged process. The body of knowledge on which media executives and managers can draw grows as: (1) core concepts and analytical frameworks are refined, augmented and occasionally supplemented or replaced by new ideas that better explain the roles of media in their larger economic and societal contexts; (2) Rigorous empirical analysis probes the limitations of current understanding and raises new questions; and (3) Grounded case studies extract knowledge through theoretically informed observation of situations and processes that are too complex and multi-faceted for more tightly controlled statistical analyses but still are too rich in their potential to contribute to knowledge to ignore. All three prongs are represented in this edited volume, which draws on the best of the new research and thinking showcased at the Annual Conference of the International Media Management Academic Association held during October 24-25, 2014 in Pamplona, Spain. The book’s 10 chapters are organized into three main sections that move, respectively, from a high level focus on core principals and fundamental challenges to effective management, to more narrowly focused research (but with generalizable findings) on solutions to concrete and specific problems faced by media firms trying to improve their results from the services and products they offer, to case studies of market-level change in three very different political and economic environments. The remainder of this brief introduction was written as a guide to the research and findings presented in these sections.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of Japan’s media policies. In light of the attention Japanese media content has attracted in recent years, not only in Japan but also overseas, the book examines the media industry that supports such content. Beginning with the traditional terrestrial broadcasting industry, it also covers cable TV, satellite broadcasting, and over-the-top media services (OTT), as well as media policies for film, animation, games and music. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), a key media industry regulator in Japan, has been developing broadcasting policies for more than 70 years, and while their traditional policies have not changed in principle, the scope of their business sphere has expanded. For instance, major broadcasting stations in Tokyo, known as key stations, have played an important role in filmmaking with the big four film companies, and have started joint ventures with major OTT, such as Hulu. This book allows readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the changes in the Japanese media industry in general and the related policies in Japan, while also offering insights into developments in the individual sectors.

When the financial markets collapsed in 2008, the media industry was affected by a major slump in advertising revenues, and a formerly highly successful business model fell into a state of decay. This economic crisis has threatened core social values of contemporary democracies, such as freedom, diversity and equality. Taking a normative and policy perspective, this book discusses threats and opportunities for the media industry in Europe: What are the implications of the crisis for professional journalism, the media industry, and the process of political communication? Can non- state and non-market actors profit from the crisis? And what are media policy answers at the national and European level?
