Localization policies are becoming increasingly important due to growing urban populations and the need for services to be provided by nearby administrative units. As a result, many countries are reforming their systems to strengthen local governments by giving them more authority, responsibility, and resources. These local governments evolve into democratic institutions with greater autonomy, flexibility, and citizen participation, though their structures and functions vary widely across countries. This variation stems from differences in political systems, cultural contexts, and levels of localization, highlighting the importance of comparative analysis in public administration. Studying and transferring successful local governance practices from one country to another can help improve public service delivery and guide reform efforts globally. Policy Innovation and Maintaining Influential Local Governments explores the developments in local government systems, and the policies of different countries, their effects, contributions, and examples of good practice. It addresses the changes in local government policies and provides a comparison opportunity. This book covers topics such as ethics and law, inclusive government, and policymaking, and is a useful resource for business owners, government officials, policymakers, academicians, researchers, and scientists.

This book assesses the processes and outcomes of international urban networks in Europe from 2007 to the present day. Focusing on Greece in particular, it examines 162 municipalities involved in more than 240 European city networks to shed light on the various factors that affect cities’ capacities to act as international actors. The book demonstrates that the participation of Greek municipalities in European city networks has entailed changes to local political structures, policies and procedures, as well as the strengthening of a ‘European’ identity and the creation of long-term partnerships. At the same time, these changes have often clashed with bureaucratic traditions and unfavorable economic conditions, which have mitigated the reformatory potential of European city networking. Providing important insights into city diplomacy and Europeanization, the book will appeal to scholars and students of public administration, European integration and political science, as well as professionals and practitioners.
