Much like in everyday life, politeness is key to the smooth running of relationships and interactions. Professional contexts, however, tend to be characterised by a plethora of behaviours that may be specific to that context. They include ‘polite’ behaviours, ‘impolite’ behaviours and behaviours that arguably fall somewhere between – or outside – such concepts. The twelve chapters making up this edited collection explore these behaviours in a range of communication contexts representative of business, medical, legal and security settings. Between them, the contributions will help readers to theorize about – and in some cases operationalize (im)politeness and related behaviours for – these real-world settings. The authors take a broad, yet theoretically underpinned, definition of politeness and use it to help explain, analyse and inform professional interactions. They demonstrate the importance of understanding how interactions are negotiated and managed in professional settings. The edited collection has something to offer, therefore, to academics, professionals and practitioners alike.

Power and Politeness in the Workplace has become established as a seminal text for courses in language and professional communication. Co-authored by bestselling author Janet Holmes, this text provides insights into the way we all talk at work, including a wealth of material illustrating the way people communicate with each other in their ordinary everyday encounters in their workplaces. The analysis focuses, in particular, on how and why people "do" power and politeness in the workplace, and examines the discourse strategies involved in balancing the competing demands of meeting workplace objectives and getting things done on time with maintaining good collegial workplace relationships. Drawing on a large and very varied corpus of data collected in a wide range of workplaces, the authors explore specific types of workplace talk, such as giving advice and instructions, solving problems, running meetings and making decisions. Attention is also paid to the important contribution of less obviously relevant types of workplace talk such as humour and small talk, to the construction of effective workplace relationships. In the final chapter some of the practical implications of the analyses are identified. This Routledge Linguistics Classic is here reissued with a new preface from the authors, covering the methods of analysis, an update on the Language in the Workplace project and a look at the work in the context of recent research. Power and Politeness in the Workplace continues to be a vital read for researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of applied linguistics and communication studies.

Approaches to Specialised Discourse in Higher Education and Professional Contexts brings together a number of studies by various authors in the common field of languages for specific purposes (LSP). This area faces a major challenging need to work with both specialised content and language, a complex combination which can be discouraging to many a language teacher from a traditional philological background. In the introduction to this volume, Dr. Martin Hewings asks how these teachers, as mere onlookers on specialist areas in higher education and the professions, are successfully to teach students communication skills. The answer is most probably contained in no single approach or scope, but rather in a multiple probing of methods aimed at the empirical observation and analysis of language use in the specific contexts in which they are housed. The studies presented herein illustrate such a multi-fold scenario, analysing and sharing significant findings on discourse across academic disciplines and professional areas. The authors not only evince the importance of the various methodologies adopted, but also, in their role as teachers and researchers, demonstrate the significance of working as integrated members in the fields they teach. Clearly reflected in this volume is the natural adaptation of LSP research, pushing beyond theory, to filter into classroom developments and professional interactions. The fact that these papers have been selected from the fourth conference by the European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes (AELFE), held in Spain (October, 2005), indicates that the LSP community tends to look into the blend of practice and research as a key exponent for successful learning integration. Because the linguist is also the LSP practitioner, or vice versa, the enquiries that conduct these chapters are commonly addressed, either implicitly or openly, by students and teachers alike. For readers who would like to learn or know more about communicative strategies and methodological approaches in different specialisms, this book may be a valuable resource.

Mouton Series in Pragmatics (MSP) is a timely response to the growing demand for innovative and authoritative monographs and edited volumes from all angles of pragmatics. Recent theoretical work on the semantics/pragmatics interface, applications of evolutionary biology to the study of language, and empirical work within cognitive and developmental psychology and intercultural communication has directed attention to issues that warrant reexamination, as well as revision of some of the central tenets and claims of the field of pragmatics. The series welcomes proposals that reflect this endeavour and exploration within the discipline and neighboring fields such as language philosophy, communication, information science, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition and cognitive science. MSP will provide a forum for authors who represent different subfields of pragmatics including the linguistic, cognitive, social, and intercultural paradigms, and have important and intriguing ideas and research findings to share with scholars who are interested in linguistics in general and pragmatics in particular.

Polite written by Louise Mullany and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-06 with Self-Help categories.

The first ever mass-market book on politeness and the important role it plays in our work, relationships and lives, from professor and pioneer of Politeness Theory, Louise Mullany Are women really more polite than men? What is the best way to apologise? And when is it OK to swear? Politeness rules our day-to-day lives, whether it's speaking to colleagues about issues at work, dealing with difficult family members or wondering if you should eat the last piece of pie. For years, Professor Louise Mullany has been examining the prevalence and power of politeness in our everyday speech and actions, and discovering what this says about us. In Polite, Louise shows how the unseen science of politeness governs everything we do, from what we say to how we act, and reveals how a better understanding of the rules and norms of politeness can help us in all aspects of our work, leisure and home lives. And, in doing so, she answers the age-old question... are politeness standards really declining?

Women, Men and Politeness focuses on the specific issue of the ways in which women and men express politeness verbally. Using a range of evidence and a corpus of data collected largely from New Zealand, Janet Holmes examines the distribution and functions of a range of specific verbal politeness strategies in women's and men's speech and discusses the possible reasons for gender differences in this area. Data provided on interactional strategies, 'hedges and boosters', compliments and apologies, demonstrates ways in which women's politeness patterns differ from men's, with the implications of these different patterns explored, for women in particular, in the areas of education and professional careers.
