Solar Express, the thrilling, new, hard science fiction novel from New York Times bestselling author L. E. Modesitt, Jr. You can't militarize space. This one rule has led to decades of peaceful development of space programs worldwide. However, increasing resource scarcity and a changing climate on Earth's surface is causing some interested parties to militarize, namely India, the North American Union, and the Sinese Federation. The discovery of a strange artifact by Dr. Alayna Wong precipitates a crisis. What appears to be a hitherto undiscovered comet is soon revealed to be an alien structure on a cometary trajectory toward the sun. Now there is a race between countries to see who can study and control the artifact dubbed the "Solar Express" before it perhaps destroys itself. Leading the way for the North American Union is Alayna's friend, Captain Christopher Tavoian, one of the first shuttle pilots to be trained for combat in space. But, as the alien craft gets closer to its destination, it begins to alter the surface of the sun in strange new ways, ways that could lead Alayna to revolutionary discoveries--provided Chris can prevent war from breaking out as he navigates among the escalating tensions between nations. Born in 1728, French aristocrat Charles d'Eon de Beaumont had served his country as a diplomat, soldier, and spy for fifteen years when rumors that he was a woman began to circulate in the courts of Europe. D'Eon denied nothing and was finally compelled by Louis XVI to give up male attire and live as a woman, something d'Eon did without complaint for the next three decades. Although celebrated as one of the century's most remarkable women, d'Eon was revealed, after his death in 1810, to have been unambiguously male. Gary Kates's acclaimed biography of d'Eon recreates eighteenth-century European society in brilliant detail and offers a compelling portrait of an individual who challenged its conventions about gender and identity.

Inspired by actual events Target Switzerland is a gripping historical novel! The year is 1939 and Europe is hurtling toward war. Paul Muller is an intelligence agent trying to fend off threats from Germany, but also from Britain and France. Secret agreements reveal unexpected danger and new menacing entanglements as Switzerland becomes a target in the impending conflict. Target Switzerland is another plunge into the cauldron of pre-war Europe by the author, who once again delivers a richly atmospheric narrative transporting the reader into that fraught era. Muller uncovers plots and schemes to gain advantage by ruse and ploy--and violence. A compelling story of intrigue and deception as parties plot and scheme to defeat one another. The novel draws on a little-known historical fact in fashioning a taut and absorbing storyline. Diplomatic deception leads to high stakes disputes and risky encounters as Muller confronts deadly spies, negotiates with corrupt arms dealers and unravels subversive financial transactions. The atmosphere of doubt and fear will resonate with readers watching the characters confront dangerous choices, unwitting actors on a path to war. Smoky meetings, shady deals and political betrayal provide the background for an intense narrative. Readers of Danzig and A Spy in Vienna will recognize the deft pen and sophisticated narrative of the new master of the interwar novel. High praise from early reviews of Target Switzerland: "William Walker has become the new master of the interwar novel, capturing the intensity and drama of the unfolding spectacle of a world spinning toward war. He continues to deliver sophisticated insight into an epoch of uncertainty and fear, bringing history to life in his realistic portrayal of men and women confronting life and death choices." - Trace Evidence Press. "A gripping, fast-paced novel of historical fiction that captures the atmosphere of fear and uncertainty as Muller seeks to navigate forces jockeying for position in the unfolding crisis. Arms trafficking, financial manipulation and casual resort to violence offer the framework for this richly detailed and highly entertaining novel." - Bookmarks. Switzerland was a target for all the belligerents. Paul Muller is the agent charged with keeping them at bay.

One whirlwind week of love, blackmail, and betrayal follows three brothers through teeming prewar New York in this "entertaining . . . outsized . . . big, expressive debut" (Wall Street Journal). June 1939. Francis Dempsey and his shell-shocked brother, Michael, are on an ocean liner from Ireland bound for their brother Martin's home in New York City, having stolen a small fortune from the IRA. During the week that follows, the lives of these three brothers collide spectacularly with big-band jazz musicians, a talented but fragile heiress, a Jewish street photographer facing a return to Nazi-occupied Prague, a vengeful mob boss, and the ghosts of their own family's revolutionary past. When Tom Cronin, an erstwhile assassin forced into one last job, tracks the brothers down, their lives begin to fracture. Francis must surrender to blackmail or have his family suffer fatal consequences. Michael, lost and wandering alone, turns to Lilly Bloch, a heartsick artist, to recover his decimated memory. And Martin and his wife, Rosemary, try to salvage their marriage and, ultimately, the lives of the other Dempseys. Meanwhile, with the Depression receding, all of New York is suffused with an electric feeling of hope, caught up in the fervor of the World's Fair and eager for good times after a decade of deprivation. From the smoky jazz joints of Harlem to the opulent Plaza Hotel, from the garrets of vagabonds and artists in the Bowery to the backroom warrens and shadowy warehouses of mobsters in Hell's Kitchen, Brendan Mathews brings the prewar metropolis to vivid, pulsing life. The sweeping, intricate, and ambitious storytelling throughout this remarkable debut reveals an America that blithely hoped it could avoid another catastrophic war and focus instead on the promise of the World's Fair: a peaceful, prosperous "World of Tomorrow." One whirlwind week of love, blackmail, and betrayal following three brothers through teeming prewar New York in this "entertaining . . . outsized . . . big, expressive debut" (Wall Street Journal) "A masterfully crafted novel . . . Comic, violent, and moving in equal measure."-John Irving "As rich and raucous as the city it celebrates."-O., The Oprah Magazine "Admirably fearless . . . Mathews has talent in buckets."-New York Times Book Review
