Trade unions are central to Australian social, economic and political life. They are the largest voluntary organisations in the country, are a significant presence in political life, and, as workplace organisations, are often the only effective vehicle to give voice to working people. Their role is nevertheless under serious challenge with low and declining union density and shrinking coverage of collective bargaining. Controversies surrounding several union officials have also called into the question the legitimacy of trade unions. And for some governments, trade unions are not social partners but rather targets of restrictive legislation. This book provides a critical assessment of Australian trade unions based on their democratic role as representatives of working people and their social justice role in providing, among other things, a countervailing force to employer power. Contributions by leading scholars tackle enduring themes such as economic democracy and the rule of law in the workplace, key developments in the labour market including precarious work, the 'gig' economy, and labour migration. It also addresses topics that have not received adequate attention such as trade agreements, money in politics and, importantly, the question of how the democratic and social justice roles of trade unions interact with the challenge of climate change.

Trade Unions In The New Society written by Harold J. Laski and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-29 with Political Science categories.

First Published in 1950, Trade Unions in the New Society examines the changing significance of trade unionism and the place they occupy in the democratic world. Harold J. Laski contrasts their function in a capitalist or socialist society with what it became under Russian totalitarianism. This book explores the relation between trade unions and the public, trade unions and the law and trade unions and democracy to show the impact of developments such as mass production, social security and a planned economy on the position of the working man and considers the proper role of the government in disputes which may affect the basic public welfare. Most important of all, possibly, are Laski’s observations on the desirability of labour activity in organised politics. Trade Unions in the New Society will be of immense interest for scholars and researchers of politics, political economy, labour studies, and for all who are concerned with the future of democracy.

Russian Trade Unions And Industrial Relations In Transition written by S. Ashwin and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-11-14 with Social Science categories.

Many commentators expected the Russian trade unions to collapse along with the system of which they were an integral part, but the trade unions survived the storms of the Yeltsin era by adopting a strategy of 'social partnership'. This book, based on case-study and survey research in eight Russian regions, provides a detailed account of the development of trade unionism in Russia since the collapse of the soviet system. Against the background of the role of the trade unions in the soviet system, the book reviews the political role, structure and functions of the trade unions, development of social partnership at federal and regional levels, and provides a detailed account of the activity of the trade unions at the level of enterprise. The book concludes with a critical assessment of the Russian unions' strategy of 'social partnership' and locates it in comparative perspective.
