Modern science and technologies encounter a complex set of decisions with ethical, legal, and social implications. In recent years, as political and religious interests interfere with scientific facts and results, science has become politicized in public discourses. In response to the politicization of science, citizens develop polarized attitudes toward science. This dissertation explores how scientific issues are politicized and polarized among the U.S. public. Using survey and experimental data, I investigate key factors that contribute to the formation of attitude polarization toward science among citizens, focusing more narrowly on the impact of personal values, online public discussion, and media frames. First, using nationally representative survey data from the 2002 and 2012 General Social Survey, I examine how scientific issues have shown polarized attitudes over time. The analysis shows that ideological and religious beliefs are significantly correlated to the formation of attitude polarization in scientific issues. Moreover, media use and people's knowledge serve to reinforce their pre-existing attitudes toward scientific issues when considering ideology and religiosity. Second, using a nationally representative online experimental survey conducted in 2012, I examine how people interpret scientific news stories and select subsequent information regarding nanotechnology. This analysis shows that people use their value predispositions such as ideology, party identification, and religiosity to interpret scientific information and form their attitudes toward nanotechnology. Moreover, they are motivated to select subsequent information in the attitude-consistent way. Third, this dissertation explores the impact of online interpersonal discussion on attitude formation toward nanotechnology. Using a nationally representative online experimental survey conducted in 2010, I examine how online comments in response to a news story about nanotechnology influence news bias perception and how biased perception affects the attitude formation toward the issue. The analysis finds that exposure to dissenting comments plays a significant role in forming news bias perception when considering individuals' level of need for information. Moreover, this dissertation finds that news bias perception affects attitude polarization on the scientific issue, especially depending on people's prior attitudes toward nanotechnology. Finally, this dissertation discusses the theoretical and practical implications in the field of science communication and offers suggestions for future research.

This paper argues that the politicization of science in recent times coincides with a necessary turn toward social epistemology and historicist conceptions of science and rationality. It is shown how history, philosophy, and sociology of science (HPSS) make important contributions to interdisciplinary research in public understanding of science (PUS). However, it is argued (in agreement with Kuhn's finding) that critical HPSS is not a necessary part of traditional, pre-professional science education, but is a necessary part of any general or liberal science education, the latter being needed to foster critical ability among citizens to judge increasingly complex science-related public issues. With a view to informing such an approach, fundamental problems at the intersection of science and society are analyzed, concerning the relationship between science and the state, implications of the new life sciences for politics, and ultimately whether modern science is to remain in contradiction with modern political self-conceptions.
