Examining the cases of Quebec, Catalonia, and Scotland, Keating (political science, U. of Western Ontario) argues that nationalist politics have shifted from demanding a nation-state to preserving social cohesion in a world of weakened states. He asserts that the new nationalisms are civic rather than ethnic and exclusive, and that they are free trading and rooted in civil society as much as in state institutions. This is a comparative study of nationalism and nation-building in Quebec, Catalonia and Scotland. All are historic nations within larger states. Nationalism is presented as a mechanism for dealing with the place of the territorial society in the new order. It is no longer concerned with the creation of a traditional nation state but with maximizing autonomy in a world where the nation state has lost its old powers and status.

The failed Meech Lake and Charlotteown accords, the creation of the Bloc Quebecois, and the stronger impulse toward sovereignty now point to a narrowing of options to Canadian constitutional renewal.

Nationalism And The Politics Of Culture In Quebec written by Richard Handler and has been published by Univ of Wisconsin Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988 with History categories.

Richard Handler's pathbreaking study of nationalistic politics in Quebec is a striking and successful example of the new experimental type of ethnography, interdisciplinary in nature and intensively concerned with rhetoric and not only of anthropologists but also of scholars in a wide range of fields, and it is likely to stir sharp controversy. Bringing together methodologies of history, sociology, political science, and philosophy, as well as anthropology, Handler centers on the period 1976-1984, during which the independantiste Parti Québéois was in control of the provincial government and nationalistic sentiment was especially strong. Handler draws on historical and archival research, and on interviews with Quebec and Canadian government officials, as he addresses the central question: Given the similarities between the epistemologies of both anthropology and nationalist ideology, how can one write an ethnography of nationalism that does not simply reproduce--and thereby endorse--nationalistic beliefs? Handler analyzes various responses to the nationalist vision of a threatened existence. He examines cultural tourism, ideology of the Quebec government, legislations concerning historical preservation, language legislation and policies towards immigrants and "cultural minorities." He concludes with a thoughtful meditation on the futility of nationalisms.

After the Quiet Revolution policies in Quebec society were driven by a discourse of sovereignty and Quebec nation-building that fundamentally challenged the legitimacy and integrity of the Canadian federation. Since the 1995 referendum a different set of priorities has come to the fore in Quebec society - health care, education, employment and economic development, security, and the environment. These are the same issues that dominate the public agenda across the country. Canada: The State of the Federation 2005 explores the significance of this shift - is it a temporary period of calm or an essential realignment of Quebec's relationships with Canada and the rest of the world? Can the abatement of overt nationalist sentiment be attributed to the success of nationalist policies themselves, particularly those relating to the French language? Authors in this volume examine the political economy of Quebec nationalism, the impact of regional and global integration, the rise of new social movements, political party dynamics, the increasingly multicultural character of urban Quebec, and the shifting intergovernmental dynamics in the federation.

"The sixth edition of Canadian Politics offers a comprehensive introduction to Canadian government and politics by a highly respected group of political scientists. For this edition, the editors have organized the book into six parts. Part I examines Canadian citizenship and political identities, while Parts II and III deal with Canadian political institutions, including Aboriginal governments, and contain new chapters on the public service and Quebec. Parts IV and V shift the focus to the political process, discussing issues pertaining to culture and values, parties and elections, media, groups, movements, gender, and diversity. The chapters on Parliament, bureaucracy, political culture, political communications, social movements, and media are new to this edition. Finally, three chapters in the last section of the book analyze components of Canadian politics that have been gaining prominence during the last decade: the effects of globalization, the shifting ground of Canadian-American relations, and the place of Canada in the changing world order. Of the 21 chapters in this edition, 9 are new and the remainder have been thoroughly revised and updated."--pub. desc.
