The first major study of party conflict in England over the later Stuart period from the reign of Charles II to its culmination under Anne. Tim Harris shows how the party configuration of subsequent British politics emerged in these crucial years. He deals not only with high politics and with the organisation of the new parties, but also with the ideological roots of party strife.

Representation And Misrepresentation In Later Stuart Britain written by Mark Knights and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-09-28 with Literary Criticism categories.

In this original and illuminating new study, Mark Knights reveals how the political culture of the eighteenth century grew out of earlier trends and innovations. Arguing that the period from 1675 needs to be seen as the second stage of a seventeenth-century revolution that ran on until c.1720, Representation and Misrepresentation in Later Stuart Britain charts the growth of a national political culture and traces the development of the public as an arbiter of politics. In doing so, it uncovers a crisis of public discourse and credibility, and finds a political enlightenment rooted in local and national partisan conflict. The later Stuart period was characterized by frequent elections, the lapse of pre-publication licensing, the emergence of party politics, the creation of a public debt, and ideological conflict over popular sovereignty. These factors combined to enhance the status of the 'public', not least in requiring it to make numerous acts of judgement. Contemporaries from across the political spectrum feared that the public might be misled by the misrepresentations pedalled by their rivals. Each side, and those ostensibly of no side, discerned a culture of passion, slander, libel, lies, hypocrisy, dissimulation, conspiracy, private languages, and fictions. 'Truth' appeared an ambiguous, political matter. Yet the reaction to partisanship was also creative, for it helped to construct an ideal form of political discourse. This was one based on reason rather than passion, on moderation rather than partisan zeal, on critical reading rather than credulity; and an increasing realization that these virtues arose from infrequent rather than frequent elections. Finding synergies between social, political, religious, scientific, literary, cultural, and intellectual history, Representation and Misrepresentation in Later Stuart Britain reinvigorates the debate about the emergence of 'the public sphere' in the later Stuart period.

New essays focussing on the problems of politics, women, and print culture in seventeenth-century Britain. This collection of essays, presented as a tribute to the career of Lois Green Schowerer, the highly-esteemed scholar of early modern British history, explores the several topics which have been central to her interests: politics, political thought, and the role of women in later Stuart Britain. Through two related sections, on the politics of violence and revolutions, and on the play of political imagination, American and British scholars address ProfessorSchowerer's pioneering brief for the role of radicalism in the three decades spanning the Restoriation and the Revolution: Professor Schwoerer offers her own view and summary of that "wicked and turbulent" era in response. Throughout, the articles are ultimately concerned with the underlying issue of sovereignty, coming to terms with the contradictions and continuing tensions between a desire for monarchichal stability and the fear of an emerging absolutism an issue not unique to the Restoration era. Whether looking back to the early career of Thomas Hobbes, the antecedents of patriarchalism and ancient constitutionalism, or the trial and execution of Charles I, they see the Restoration and Revolution in the broader context of the whole seventeenth century. Professor HOWARD NENNER teaches in the Department of History, Smith College. Contributors: Mark Goldie, Janelle Greenberg, Tim Harris, Howard Nenner, Linda Levy Peck, J.G.A. Pocock, Gordon Schochet, Hilda L. Smith, Steven Zwicker, Melinda Zook, Lois Green Schwoerer.

Excerpt from The Theory of Toleration, Under the Later Stuarts The following essay is one of two to which the Prince Consort Prize was awarded in 1910, and is now published in accordance with the prescribed regulations, With the permission of the examiners I have made certain alterations in preparing it for the press, considerably expanding the first chapter, and adding a final chapter of recapitulation and summary. Also a large number of minor alterations and additions have been made. Thus the essay is somewhat increased in bulk, but it has undergone no essential change in substance or structure. In dealing with the actual controversy between the years 1660 and 1714, as distinct from the intellectual tendencies which led up to it, I have presented the views of writers as far as possible in their own words, and have as a rule tried to bring forward all the main arguments for toleration used in the particular work under consideration, whether they had been employed in an earlier work or not. Riot, Rebellion and Popular Politics in Early Modern England reassesses the relationship between politics, social change and popular culture in the period c. 1520-1730. It argues that early modern politics needs to be understood in broad terms, to include not only states and elites, but also disputes over the control of resources and the distribution of power. Andy Wood assesses the history of riot and rebellion in the early modern period, concentrating upon: popular involvement in religious change and political conflict, especially the Reformation and the English Revolution; relations between ruler and ruled; seditious speech; popular politics and the early modern state; custom, the law and popular politics; the impact of literacy and print; and the role of ritual, gender and local identity in popular politics.
