Seeds are at the heart of a transformation process that affects more than two billion people worldwide. This study on smallholder farmers in Tanzania examines how local seed systems are anchored in the socio-cultural structures of smallholder life worlds. Using the example of seeds, the close interweaving of agricultural and social practice is traced and it is worked out how individual processes of modernisation brought in from outside have far-reaching consequences for smallholder coexistence. The study provides a concrete, detailed and differentiated account of everyday farming life and of how smallholder households deal with seeds. A particular focus is on seed exchange relationships and how these provide both social security and social cohesion in the study region. The study is based on extensive field research and intensive interviews with farmers, who also have their own say in the work.

Equilibria protect against crisis. All disciplines of sciences have the objective to create equilibria. But economics are not successful in this point. Here a simple equilibrium model based on a wage-price-rule is demonstrated. Economics are able to create economic equilibria by using this rule. But in economic systems there are a lot of rules, especially in accounting, which make economic equilibria impossible. These rules must be changed. If it is possible to create economic equilibria, the side-effect is the realization of economic sustainability.

Marcel Mauss schrieb 1923 in seinem Essay Die Gabe, er habe in den Motiven des Gabentauschs »einen der Felsen gefunden, auf denen unsere Gesellschaften ruhen«. Bis heute wirft diese These Fragen auf: Wie stiftet die Gabe Solidarität, Anerkennung und Vertrauen in vormodernen Gesellschaften? Gelingt ihr das auch in modernen Gesellschaften? Aufbauend auf einer pointierten Rezeptionsgeschichte von Mauss' Essay und im Dialog mit Denkern aus Philosophie, Politik- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften kommt dieses Buch zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Gabe neben Markt und Staat eine zentrale Funktion in unserer Gesellschaft hat. Darüber hinaus wird gezeigt, welche politischen Konsequenzen daraus resultieren und wie Gabeninteraktionen zur Sicherung des sozialen Gefüges genutzt werden können.
