This is an open access book. Faculty of Social and Political Science, State Islamic University Walisongo Semarang, has been playing significant roles in building global peace and justice by conducting scientific research and creating a space for academic dialogue and discussion. This goal is in line with our vision to be a Research Faculty based on the unity of sciences for humanity and civilization. As part of the efforts to create a space for academic dialogue at a global level, we organize an international conference which aims to develop scientific knowledge, build institutional capacity, and strengthen international networking. The conference is also held to support State Islamic University Walisongo Semarang in achieving its vision to be an Islamic world-class university. The conference raises the issue of democracy and social transformation to capture the social and political dynamics. The selection of this topic is based on the idea that technological development is becoming a crucial issue within modern society in which people tend to experience alienation within the rapid social and political transformation. Democracy as a political system that ensures transparency, citizen participation, and human rights protection is now under threat. Having the fact that there is a growing tendency of using transactional politics to win political interests such as the use of money and identity in political processes, therefore, political analysts consider this situation as the regression of democracy. Rapid social and cultural transformation as a consequence of advanced technology creates problems in modern society. On one hand, technology has made the life of people easier. However, on the other hand, the sense of humanity’s values and principles is declining. This situation can be observed in the decrease in social solidarity and the rise of individualism. Modernity that values productivity and economic growth has brought a negative impact on the life of human being and nature. The exploitative character of industrialization has created an ecological crisis. Advanced information technology has loosened social cohesivity and the rise of instrumental rationality has removed local genius or local wisdom from the life of society. Since the ultimate goal of humanity is respecting the dignity of human beings, hence, bringing back humanity to the center of the development program is crucial, especially in the current social and political dynamics. In the political context, humanity means respecting the basic rights of the citizen and putting them as a subject of political development and not perceiving citizens as only an instrument to win political power. Based on the above background, this conference is organized. The overall goal of the conference is to mainstream humanity in the current social and political change. The conference is also expected to be an arena for scholars and experts in social and political science as well as practitioners and policymakers to meet and exchange ideas and perspectives for a better future of our society.

Marjinalisasi dan diskriminasi yang dialami sebuah etnis dalam kurun waktu yang sangat lama membuat ikatan emosional etnis semakin erat dan kuat, karena adanya common cause, common goal, and common interest dan akhirnya memunculkan politik identitas, yang merupakan aliran politik dengan melibatkan seseorang atau kelompok masyarakat yang memiliki kesamaan karakteristik, seperti agama, etnis dan budaya.Konsep tersebut sejalan dengan simpulan dan temuan penelitian ini, yaitu: (1) marjinalisasi dan diskriminasi etnis Dayak di Kalimantan Barat telah menyebabkan ikatan emosional etnis Dayak semakin erat dan kuat, sehingga memunculkan politik identitas etnis Dayak dan membuat lebih mudah dikonsolidasi untuk memilih tokoh dari etnis Dayak sebagai Gubernur; (2) demokrasi dan desentralisasi pada era reformasi merupakan peluang bagi etnis Dayak untuk berkompetisi dengan mencalonkan tokoh dari etnis Dayak sebagai Gubernur; (3) kemenangan tokoh dari etnis Dayak sebagai Gubernur Pada Pilkada Gubernur Kalimantan Barat pada Tahun 2007 telah menggugurkan mindset yang dibentuk oleh kolonial Belanda bahwa Dayak Ulun atau kuli dan oleh Orde Baru bahwa Dayak pemalas serta tidak produktif, sekaligus kemenangan ini telah menyelamatkan dan mengangkat harkat dan martabat etnis Dayak yang selama ini kurang diperhatikan; (4) kenyataan bahwa lembaga politik resmi atau partai politik tidak selamanya mampu menjadi arena perpolitikan yang handal untuk dapat memenangkan kandidat dalam sebuah kompetisi seperti Pilkada; (5) Teori Were (1996) yang mengatakan bahwa partai politik yang representative merupakan wadah dan alat untuk proses konsolidasi, komunikasi, dan kompetisi dalam pemilihan umum, dapat digugurkan oleh munculnya politik identitas yang memenangkan tokoh etnis Dayak pada Pilkada Gubernur Kalimantan Barat tahun 2007. Buku dengan analisis komprehensif ini membawa kita pada kenyataan bahwa partai politik tidak selamanya dan bukan satu-satunya yang dapat diandalkan sebagai wadah atau alat pemenangan Pemilihan Umum. Munculnya politik identitas telah berhasil mengkonsolidasikan etnis Dayak secara emosional untuk memenangkan tokoh Dayak dalam kontestasi politik. Buku Kebangkitan Etnis menuju Pilitik Identitas ini menawarkan referensi bagi kepala Negara (cq. Kementrian dalam negeri) sebagai penentu kebijakan daerah di seluruh Indonesia terutama dalam pembangunan infrastruktur di wilayah pedalaman yang sudah lama terabaikan, pengkaji ilmu politik, peminat studi politik, dan para pemangku kepentingan di bidang politik.

The core argument of this book is that citizenship is produced and practiced through movements against injustice. These take the shape of struggles—by people at the grass-roots level and middle classes and their representing organisations and activists—for cultural recognition, social and economic justice, and popular representation. Such popular struggles in Indonesia have largely ended up engaging with the state through both discursive and non-discursive processes. While the state is a common focal point, these struggles are fragmented across different sectors and subject positions. Developing chains of solidarity among fragments of struggles is highly important, yet attempts at bridging fragmentation leave much to be desired. The character and fragmentation of popular struggles reflects the diversity of injustices and subject positions in society, but is also shaped by political dynamics. The struggle for citizenship and the historical development of democracy in Indonesia are closely interwoven. The inability to bridge fragmentation among citizenship struggles mimics pro-democracy movements' lack of capacity in building broader alliances. Likewise, these movements' tendency toward elitism and habit of penetrating the State also characterise current struggles for citizenship. In this situation of multiple injustices, collectivities and mobilisations, it could be argued that democratic representation and politics is the foremost arena for integrating and transforming antagonistic relations within fragmented popular struggles. However, this requires a democracy that not only has sovereign control over public affairs, but also contains robust channels and organisations for political representation. In Indonesia, it is found that formal democracy is underperforming in this respect. It is thus a foremost concern to transform democracy itself, also as a means for transforming structures of injustice in society. The development of transformative agendas, organisations, and strategies remains a continued need and challenge for the realisation of citizenship in contemporary Indonesia.

This is an open access book. The education sector during the Covid-19 Pandemic is currently undergoing a total reformation. The education process at schools and colleges which was carried out face-to-face has now turned into virtual face-to-face learning utilizing various platforms. Also, the Covid-19 Pandemic has impacted the research and development process in the field which must be delayed due to the risk of Covid-19 transmission. In regard to this, the educational process does not run optimally. In fact, education is the process of developing the future generation of a country that are supposed to supported by all parties while looking for solutions to the problems at hand. As part of social sciences, the objects of historical study include humans who are bound by the dimensions of space and time. This confirms that history is part of science that is tied to human life. Therefore, various policies taken by the government must also be reviewed from the past historical experience with adjustments to the conditions of the era. Moreover, historical experience will provide an idea that humans are always innovating to solve the problems they face, especially policies related to education and learning.Based on those problems, History Education Study Program of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta will hold an international conference on "Future Teaching and Learning: A Disruptive Innovation." The aim of the conference is providing a forum for exchanging information and finding solutions to learning and teaching problems in the current era of disruption, considering that the Covid-19 Pandemic has changed everything. This conference will seek solutions and innovations from various perspectives which include social, historical and educational perspectives.
