Dénommer les lieux du monde est une opération humaine essentielle de territorialisation. Elle peut être objet de conflits ou de contestations. Elle se décline de nombreuses manières qui ont à voir avec les rapports à l’espace individuel et collectif, les imaginaires et les identités associés. Les traces des noms de lieux ou toponymes sont également différentes selon les modalités d’inscription dans le paysage et l’histoire. Elles constituent un héritage, un témoignage, un marquage des lieux qui renseignent sur leurs origines, leurs fonctions et leurs usages, mais aussi sur le sens que leur donne une société ou un pouvoir. La dénomination des lieux est ainsi étudiée dans cet ouvrage de différents points de vue. Ceux-ci vont de la linguistique à la géographie politique et culturelle, en passant par l’histoire, l’anthropologie, la cartographie et d’autres champs d’études comme les études urbaines, les humanités numériques ou les études subalternes. Naming the places of the world is an essential human act of territorialization. As the subject of conflict or dispute, naming plays out in numerous ways that involve collective and individual relationships to space, whether functional or imaginary, as well as the identities related to them. This volume examines the discursive relations between indigenous, colonial and post-colonial legacies of place-naming in Africa in terms of the production of urban space and place. It is conducted by tracing and analysing place-naming processes, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa during colonial times (British, French, Belgian, Portuguese), with a considerable attention to both the pre-colonial and post-colonial situations. By combining in-depth area studies research – some of the contributions are of ethnographic quality – with colonial history, planning history and geography, the authors intend to show that culture matters in research on place names. This volume goes beyond the recent understanding obtained in critical studies of nomenclature, normally based on lists of official names, that place naming reflects the power of political regimes, nationalism, and ideology.
