Emerge così il punto critico della democrazia, l’incapacità di ribaltare realmente i rapporti di forza economici, sociali e politici e di riformare profondamente il sistema, fondandolo sulle ragioni della minorità. Nella perenne dialettica tra contestazione e repressione, Luigi Manconi e Gaetano Lettieri ci ricordano che la via da seguire, perché il conflitto produca mutamento sociale e non si dissipi in violenza, è sempre quella che si può cogliere nella condizione di chi sta in basso, dei non garantiti, degli spossessati, di chi è vittima e di chi è prigioniero. Perché «la comunità felice che il Sessantotto ha immaginato e si è illuso di vivere è quella sempre a venire della giustizia infinita, che sa vedere insieme il poliziotto umiliato e il giovane ferito: l’ossimoro del Poliziotto-Sessantotto».

De Gennaro, ora presidente di Finmeccanica, e i suoi collaboratori non si toccano. Troppe onorificenze. Troppe amicizie. Anche tra i media. Intanto le auto rimangono senza benzina e gli agenti continuano ad avere stipendi da fame mentre vengono assegnati appalti miliardari. Il partito della polizia è anche il partito degli affari. “Se non c’è una cultura del diritto in chi orienta il pensiero collettivo – sostiene il criminologo Francesco Carrer – mi chiedo come possa nascere in un corpo di polizia i cui vertici sono più attenti ai desiderata dei politici che alle esigenze di chi è in prima linea.”

This work asks questions on the relationship between innovative collective actors, such as the 'new social movements' and the political institutions of representative democracy starting from an underlying hypothesis: the idea that civil society is the main source of political legitimation of liberal democracy. More precisely, what this monograph reflects on is the capacity of the social movements to concretely test alternative forms of democracy. The aim of the contemporary movements is to augment the fundamental values of the "democratic revolution", namely the principles of freedom and equality. They constantly lead to conflict and social antagonism: indeed new conflicts and new antagonisms arise every time that the movements implement radical experiences of democracy in the multiple and different spheres of social life. Only by accepting and setting value by these alternative democratic practices and experiences - and this is the author of this work's thesis - may democratic ideals be revived in contemporary society.
