This volume explores the way governments endeavoured to build and maintain public support for the war in Afghanistan, combining new insights on the effects of strategic narratives with an exhaustive series of case studies. In contemporary wars, with public opinion impacting heavily on outcomes, strategic narratives provide a grid for interpreting the why, what and how of the conflict. This book asks how public support for the deployment of military troops to Afghanistan was garnered, sustained or lost in thirteen contributing nations. Public attitudes in the US, Canada, Australia and Europe towards the use of military force were greatly shaped by the cohesiveness and content of the strategic narratives employed by national policy-makers. Assessing the ability of countries to craft a successful strategic narrative, the book addresses the following key areas: 1) how governments employ strategic narratives to gain public support; 2) how strategic narratives develop during the course of the conflict; 3) how these narratives are disseminated, framed and perceived through various media outlets; 4) how domestic audiences respond to strategic narratives; 5) how this interplay is conditioned by both events on the ground, in Afghanistan, and by structural elements of the domestic political systems. Pewnego dnia pakują się do starego mercedesa MB 100 i ruszają dawnym jedwabnym szlakiem, który w latach 70. przemierzały kolorowe autobusy pełne dzieci kwiatów głodnych przygód, narkotyków i wolnej miłości. Autorzy chcą zobaczyć nigdy niezdobytą przez obce wojska dolinę Pandższiru i Bamian, buddyjskie sanktuarium zniszczone przez islamskich radykałów. Odnaleźć dawnych przyjaciół, których Andrzej poznał podczas reporterskich wypraw do strefy wojny. Ale najpierw będą musieli pokonać przyprawiające o zawroty głowy serpentyny w górach Armenii i przeprawić się przez granice, na których każdy obcy witany jest z podejrzliwością. Kto ich ugości, a kto będzie chciał oszukać? Czy stary szaman pomoże Eli pozbyć się lęku wysokości? Co zrobią, gdy na górskiej drodze hamulce w kamperze odmówią posłuszeństwa? A przede wszystkim: czy zdążą dotrzeć do Kabulu, zanim zajmą go talibowie? Opinie o książce Andrzeja i Eleonory Mellerów „Kamperem do Kabulu. Hippisowskim szlakiem przez Turcję, Gruzję, Armenię, Iran i Afganistan”: Świetna książka! Nie pamiętam, żebym czytał coś tak dobrego, odważnego i zabawnego. Reportaż Eli i Andrzeja to ekscytująca, a jednocześnie wzruszająca opowieść o podróży pełnej przygód oraz niezwykłych spotkań z ludźmi, historią i kulturą Azji – tej znanej i tej jeszcze nie do końca odkrytej. Vincent V. Severski Andrzej Meller zaczął jeździć na Wschód jako nastolatek. Gdy trzy dekady później wraca na hippisowski szlak z żoną Eleonorą, wciąż nie przypomina statecznego pana w średnim wieku. Ich paromiesięczna rajza przez Turcję, Kaukaz i Iran to radość życia, junacka fantazja i sztubackie wygłupy na postojach. Poważniej robi się w Afganistanie (przygodny znajomy mówi Mellerom, że jeden przeżyty tam miesiąc liczy się za sześć lat studiów). A epilog to już jazda bez trzymanki. Jak pisał Tolkien, nikt prawie nie wie, dokąd go zaprowadzi droga, póki nie stanie u celu. Wojciech Górecki Ilu Polaków pojechało do Afganistanu, by naprawdę poznać ten kraj i o nim napisać? Zapewne niewielu. Dlatego książka Eleonory i Andrzeja Mellerów jest tak wyjątkowa – opowiadają oni o mojej ojczyźnie nie z perspektywy podróżników, a ludzi, którzy żyją w Afganistanie na co dzień. Pokazują go takim, jaki jest: pełnym zaskoczeń zarówno dla samych autorów, jak i dla czytelników. Tahir Qadiry, ambasador Afganistanu w Polsce Ta książka to podróż do świata, którego już nie ma... ale który być może się odrodzi. Nic przecież nie trwa wiecznie, nieuznawana przez żadne państwo władza talibów też się kiedyś skończy. Życie dopisało niezwykły epilog do i tak niezwykłej książki Andrzeja i Eleonory Mellerów – 15 sierpnia 2021 roku, już po ich powrocie do Polski, upadł Kabul i konieczna była ewakuacja Afgańczyków, którzy współpracowali z polskimi instytucjami wojskowymi i cywilnymi.
