Noblistka uczy nas, że „tłumacze codziennie ratują świat': ,,stanowią bowiem elementy składowe czegoś w rodzaju przewodzącej tkanki nerwowej''. która umożliwia komunikację międzyludzką. Jednak o samych tłumaczach wiemy bardzo niewiele, a już tłumacze wieków wcześniejszych, którzy przez stulecia wzbogacali polską literaturę o utwory autorów zagranicznych, są dla nas światem całkowicie nieznanym. Uważam, że monografia Karoliny Dębskiej jest w polskim przekładoznawstwie pozycją bardzo wartościową, godną publikacji i rozpowszechnienia w dobie zwrotów, jakie przechodzi nasza dyscyplina. Jest świadectwem rzetelnego warsztatu naukowego, orientacji w rozmaitych nurtach i paradygmatach, a także w metodologiach badawczych, często mało znanych lub niedocenianych. Książka Karoliny Dębskiej wydobywa je na światło dzienne i ukazuje, że to, co zapomniane lub słabo znane (np. z racji swojej hermetyczności lub stopnia skomplikowania) jest bardzo przydatne i wciąż funkcjonuje w analizach takich jak ta podjęta w pracy. Przywracanie pamięci o dawnych tłumaczkach stało się także możliwe dzięki przypomnieniu metodologii Kitty van Leuven-Zwart, która zostaje tu z powodzeniem zastosowana. z recenzji prof. dr hab. This comprehensive account of performance-based assessment of L2 lexical proficiency analyzes and compares two of the primary methods of evaluation used in the field and unpacks the ways in which they tap into different dimensions of one model of lexical competence and proficiency. This book builds on the latest research on performance-based assessment, which has most recently pointed to the application of more quantitative measures to L2 data, to systematically explore the qualitative method of using human raters in assessment exercises and the quantitative method of using automatic computation of statistical measures of lexis and phraseology. Supported by an up-to-date review of the existing literature, both approaches’ unique features are highlighted but also compared to one another to provide a holistic overview of performance-based assessment as it stands today at both the theoretical and empirical level. These findings are exemplified in a concluding chapter, which summarizes results from an empirical study looking at a range of lexical and phraseological features and human raters’ scores of over 150 essays written by both L2 learners of English and native speakers. Taken together, the volume challenges existing tendencies within the field which attempt to use one method to validate one another by demonstrating their capacity to indicate very different elements of lexical proficiency, thereby offering a means by which to better conceptualize performance-based assessment of L2 vocabulary in the future. This book will be of interest to students and researchers working in second language acquisition and applied linguistics research, particularly those interested in issues around assessment, vocabulary acquisition, and language proficiency.

Since its emergence in the seventeenth century as a distinctive cultural system, children's literature has had a culturally inferior status resulting from its existence in a netherworld between the literary system and the educational system. In addition to its official readership—children—it has to be approved of by adults. Writers for children, explains Zohar Shavit, are constrained to respond to these multiple systems of often mutually contradictory demands. Most writers do not try to bypass these constraints, but accept them as a framework for their work. In the most extreme cases an author may ignore one segment of the readership. If the adult reader is ignored, the writer risks rejection, as is the case of popular literature. If the writer utilizes the child as a pseudo addressee in order to appeal to an adult audience, the result can be what Shavit terms an ambivalent work. Shavit analyzes the conventions and the moral aims that have structured children's literature, from the fairy tales collected and reworked by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm—in particular, “Little Red Riding Hood”—through the complex manipulations of Lewis Carroll in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, to the subversion of the genre's canonical requirements in the chapbooks of the eighteenth century, and in the formulaic Nancy Drew books of the twentieth century. Throughout her study Shavit, explores not only how society has shaped children's literature, but also how society has been reflected in the literary works it produces for its children.
