Anche le città nuove, con le loro mura perimetrali, suggeriscono una barriera, un recinto, una difesa dalla vertigine del non-senso, sono chiuse, fortificate, hanno un centro che suggerisce incontro, condivisione, partecipazione. Culminano con torri e campanili che celebrano l'emergenza della politica e del sacro, una predominanza che si vanta di poggiare sui secoli passati del nostro Paese, non solo la romanità ma soprattutto il medioevo. La piazza di Pomezia, vero fulcro della cittadina, ancora oggi punto di ritrovo della sua popolazione, guarda ai comuni italiani del Duecento e Trecento, ai loro arengari, alle loro torri, pescando particolari da un immaginario, sconfinato repertorio della storia dell'architettura nazionale, coniugati poi nel lessico novecentesco. Manca alle "città nuove" pontine quel particolare e tangibile sentore fatto di isolamento e arcaismo che pervade i borghi rurali dell'incompiuta bonifica del Tavoliere e della Sicilia, qui la rarefazione è creata dai segni, non dal reale posizionamento nei silenzi incontaminati della campagna secolarmente schiava del latifondo come nel profondo meridione. Anche prima del boom economico degli anni Sessanta le città pontine guardano ad un compendio di attività e collegamenti moderni, ad una concezione dello spazio figlia del XX secolo, seppure dietro i voluti anacronismi e le citazioni

Following on the work of Michael Löwy, Quirico & Ragona identify relationships of “elective affinity” between figures who might appear different and dissimilar, at least at first glance: the German Anarchist Gustav Landauer, the Bolshevik Alexandra Kollontai, the German communist Paul Mattick, the Italian Socialist Raniero Panzieri, the Greek-born French euro-communist Nikos Poulantzas, the German-born Swedish Social Democrat Rudolf Meidner, and the French social scientist Alain Bihr as well as two historical struggle experiences, the Spanish Republic and the Italian revolutionary group “Lotta continua”. Frontier Socialism then analyzes these thinkers' and experiences’ respective paths to socialism based on and achieved through self-organization and self-government, not to build a new tradition but to suggest a path forward for both research and political activism.
