Pop art drew on imagery from popular culture, for example advertising or comics and emerged in the urban landscape of London and New York City. It never existed without harsh criticism; in fact it was always despised by the critics, but loved by the popular masses. This essay is going to examine the meaning and purpose of Pop art in light of the critical quotation presented above. The observations made will be clarified on the basis of the works of Andy Warhol (1928-1987) and Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997), two of the main representatives of American Pop art.

Am Ende der 1970er Jahre entstand ein ästhetisch-subjektkulturelles Konzept in der deutschsprachigen Pop-Musik, das alles ‚Kalte‘ affirmierte: ‚Kälte-Pop‘. Bands wie Kraftwerk, DAF und Einstürzende Neubauten entwickelten als Gegenentwurf zum pop- wie gegenkulturell hegemonialen Wärme-Kult ein System von Motiven und Strategien, das all jene Zeichen und Prozesse der (Post-)Moderne ästhetisierte und glorifizierte, die in der bundesdeutschen Gesellschaft und vor allem im linksalternativen Milieu als negative Aspekte einer vermeintlich kalten Welt interpretiert wurden: Gefühlslosigkeit und Dehumanisierung, Industrie und Großstadt, Künstlichkeit und Entfremdung, Disziplin und körperliche Funktionalität, Schnee und Eis, Beton und Stahl sowie Computer, Maschinen und Roboter. Dabei schlugen die ‚Kälte‘-Akteur:innen eine Brücke zu den Historischen Avantgarden der 1920er Jahre und inszenierten sich stereotypisch als ‚kalte Deutsche‘. Die Arbeit analysiert unter Einbeziehung der transnationalen Verknüpfungen die ‚Kälte-Welle‘ (1978–1983) in der deutschen Pop-Musik, ihre Bildwelten und Codes, historischen Bezüge und Rezeption, das historische Umfeld ihrer Entstehung sowie nachfolgende Erscheinungsformen ‚kalter‘ Musik, die sich bis heute in der internationalen Pop-Musik und bei Acts wie Rammstein zeigen.

Etwa 100 Jahre nach dem ersten futuristischen Manifest, das den Auftakt für eine ganze Reihe avantgardistischer Programmschriften bedeutete, bedienen sich deutschsprachige Pop-Gruppen wie Tocotronic, Locas In Love und Ja, Panik erneut der Textsorte. Titel wie »Kapitulation« und »The Angst and the Money« lassen schon erahnen, dass es sich hierbei kaum um selbstbewusste Kampfansagen handelt, wie es »Musik ist eine Waffe!« von Ton Steine Scherben noch war. Die Diskurspopgruppen verorten sich mit ihren Manifesten zwischen Kampf und Verweigerung, Innovation und Retromanie, Pop und Politik, Ästhetik und Verkrampfung, Kapitalismuskritik und Business. In kulturpoetischen Analysen wird ein breites Archiv an Pop-Manifesten mitsamt ihren Kontexten in dieser Fülle zum ersten Mal überhaupt erschlossen. The "Manifesto of Futurism" was first published more than a century ago. Since then, a whole range of avant-garde programmes have followed. There is even a belief that the present is a 'post-manifesto-era'. Yet German-speaking pop groups, such as Tocotronic, Locas In Love, and Ja, Panik still publish them. With titles like "Kapitulation" and "The Angst and the Money" the bands' manifestos are distinct for their lack of a call to action. Instead, their publications connect old ideas about imagined futures with a current reality that fails to live up expectations or promise emancipation. This text examines these manifestos, analyzes their contexts and lines of tradition informed by New Historicism and the poetics of culture as well as pop theories.
