Popular music is a growing presence in education, formal and otherwise, from primary school to postgraduate study. Programmes, courses and modules in popular music studies, popular music performance, songwriting and areas of music technology are becoming commonplace across higher education. Dennoch kommt man nicht umhin, sich mit anderen Künstlermodellen in seinem Umfeld zu vergleichen. Er oder sie müsste laut Platon Spezialist*in sein. Es stellt sich die Frage, ob in der Kunst genau das Gegenteil der Fall ist. Tolstoi beschrieb Künstler*innen als Personen, die ewig auf der Suche sind. Somit sich permanent reflektieren, weiterentwickeln, sich Fragen stellen und nie den Zustand von Perfektion erreichen. Er oder sie interessiert sich für Vieles, sucht gerade zu nach neuen Eindrücken und Herausforderung und ist in vielen Teilbereichen der Kunst tätig. Er oder sie ist das Gegenteil von einem/einer Spezialist*in. Die Person ist breit aufgestellt. Das 21. Jahrhundert hält viele Herausforderungen für Künstler*innen bereit. Der Popmusiker*innenberuf mit seinen vielen beruflichen Facetten bietet die Möglichkeit, sich individuell ein Potpourri aus Beschäftigungsfeldern zusammenzustellen. Auf der anderen Seite bietet sich die Möglichkeit, sich zu spezialisieren, um sich so eventuell einen Marktvorteil zu verschaffen. Im Folgenden soll ein Überblick über das Wirkungsfeld von Popmusiker*innen in Deutschland geschaffen werden, die Biografie, Lebensumstände und Berufspraxis der Zielgruppe untersucht werden und darüber hinaus mit individuellen, motivationspsychologischen Faktoren verglichen werden. Ob nun ein/eine Popmusiker*in dafür geschaffen ist, sich breit aufzustellen oder sich zu spezialisieren und ob der Markt ihn/sie zwingt, einer Beschäftigung nachzugehen, welche seiner/ihrer Persönlichkeit widerspricht, ist eine interessante Frage und wird nachfolgend unter obigen Gesichtspunkten betrachtet.

In this book, native popular musicologists focus on their own popular music cultures from Germany, Austria and Switzerland for the first time: from subcultural to mainstream phenomena; from the 1950s to contemporary acts. Starting with an introduction and two chapters on the histories of German popular music and its study, the volume then concentrates on focused, detailed and yet concise close readings from different perspectives (including particular historical East and West German perspectives), mostly focusing on the music and its protagonists. Moreover, these analyses deal with very original specific genres such as Schlager and Krautrock as well as transcultural genres such as Punk or Hip Hop. There are additional chapters on characteristically German developments within music media, journalism and the music industry.
