The Poetry Of Pop written by Adam Bradley and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-28 with Music categories.

A trailblazing exploration of the poetic power of popular songs, from Tin Pan Alley to the Beatles to Beyoncé and beyond. Encompassing a century of recorded music, this pathbreaking book reveals the poetic artistry of popular songs. Pop songs are music first. They also comprise the most widely disseminated poetic expression of our time. Adam Bradley traces the song lyric across musical genres from early twentieth-century Delta blues to mid-century rock 'n’ roll to today’s hits. George and Ira Gershwin’s “Fascinating Rhythm.” The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Rihanna’s “Diamonds.” These songs are united in their exacting attention to the craft of language and sound. Bradley shows that pop music is a poetry that must be heard more than read, uncovering the rhythms, rhymes, and metaphors expressed in the singing voice. At once a work of musical interpretation, cultural analysis, literary criticism, and personal storytelling, this book illustrates how words and music come together to produce compelling poetry, often where we least expect it.

There certainly is more than one kind of love. Using traditional forms of poetry (e.g., sonnet, pantoum) and forms from the pop song (e.g., perfect rhyme, repetition), Thomas Gagnon describes different kinds of love: romance and friendshipwith men and with womenlove for a father and for a mentor, even fascination with a celebrity dancer. Beneath these relationshipslike the ancient town beneath the new cityis the relationship with the self, an especially complicated relationship that Gagnon does not shrink from exploring, whether whimsically or solemnly, or whimsically and solemnly in one poem. These poems will reverberate in your mindlike the lyrics from the latest pop song.

Poetic Song Verse written by Mike Mattison and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11 with categories.

"Poetic Song Verse: Blues-Based Popular Music and Poetry invokes and critiques the relationship between blues-based popular music and poetry in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The volume is anchored in music from the 1960s, when a concentration of artists transformed modes of popular music from entertainment to art-that-entertains. Musician Mike Mattison and literary historian Ernest Suarez synthesize a wide range of writing about blues and rock-biographies, histories, articles in popular magazines, personal reminiscences, and a selective smattering of academic studies-to examine the development of a relatively new literary genre dubbed by the authors as "poetic song verse." They argue that poetic song verse was nurtured in the fifties and early sixties by the blues and in Beat coffee houses, and matured in the mid-to-late sixties in the art of Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Gil Scott-Heron, Van Morrison, and others who used voice, instrumentation, arrangement, and production to foreground semantically textured, often allusive, and evocative lyrics that resembled and engaged poetry. Among the questions asked in Poetic Song Verse are: What, exactly, is this new genre? What were its origins? And how has it developed? How do we study and assess it? To answer these questions, Mattison and Suarez engage in an extended discussion of the roots of the relationship between blues-based music and poetry and address how it developed into a distinct literary genre. Unlocking the combination of richly textured lyrics wedded to recorded music reveals a dynamism at the core of poetic song verse that can often go unrealized in what often has been considered merely popular entertainment. This volume balances historical details and analysis of particular songs with accessibility to create a lively, intelligent, and cohesive narrative that provides scholars, teachers, students, music influencers, and devoted fans with an overarching perspective on the poetic power and blues roots of this new literary genre"--

Erotic Pop is a collection of poems, drawings, and paintings. The poems are inspired by pop songs that span the past sixty years. It started with "Shagging Boys in the Street." I was inspired by Greg Holden's beautiful song, "Boys in the Street," and I wanted to sensualize it, eroticize it, and bring a different social issue to the story. That was the flame to ignite the culmination of this collection. The poems are meant to be light-hearted and fun while turning you on and bringing awareness to various social issues in the gay community. You may recognize the original song a poem is based on and sing along with the new lyrics - I know I do!I decided to include some digital drawings and pictures of paintings that I thought related to a poem and to bring colour to my words. Please note: this is for a mature audience. Some drawings contain male nudity.

Lines And Lyrics written by Matt BaileyShea and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-30 with Literary Criticism categories.

An introduction to poetry geared toward the study of song Bruce Springsteen, Benjamin Britten, Kendrick Lamar, Sylvia Plath, Outkast, and Anne Sexton collide in this inventive study of poetry and song. Drawing on literary poetry, rock, rap, musical theater, and art songs from the Elizabethan period to the present, Matt BaileyShea reveals how every issue in poetry has an important corresponding status in song, but one that is always transformed. Beginning with a discussion of essential features such as diction, meter, and rhyme, the book progresses into the realms of lineation, syntax, form, and address, and culminates in an analysis of two complete songs. Throughout, BaileyShea places classical composers and poets in conversations with contemporary songwriters and musicians (T. S. Eliot and Johnny Cash, Aaron Copland and Pink Floyd) so that readers can make close connections across time, genres, and fields, but also recognize inherent differences. To aid the reader, the author has created a Spotify playlist of all the music discussed in this book and provides time cues throughout, enabling readers to listen to the music as they read.

"Between 1945 and 1975, in both France and Greece, literature provided the aesthetic criteria, cultural prestige and institutional basis for what aspired to be a higher form of popular song and the authentic representative of a national popular music. Published poems were set to popular music, while critical discourse celebrated some songwriters not only for being 'as good as poets' but for being 'singing poets' in their own right. This challenging and stimulating study is the first to chart the parallel cultural processes in the two countries from a comparative perspective. Bringing together cultural studies with literary criticism, it offers new angles on the work of Georges Brassens, Leo Ferre, Jacques Brel, Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis and Dionysis Savvopoulos."
