L’evoluzione della popolazione, pur fondandosi su basi biologiche, dipende anche da complessi meccanismi sociali, economici e culturali propri delle società umane. I comportamenti riproduttivi delle persone, le modalità di adattamento e sfruttamento dell’ambiente naturale e antropico, le reazioni all’incontrollabilità degli eventi ma anche le scelte migratorie, condizionano i processi di crescita della popolazione e ne determinano le caratteristiche compositive. Anche i meccanismi di formazione delle famiglie, la divisione del lavoro nella società, il ruolo dei gruppi umani all’interno di essa, sono influenzati dagli eventi storici, sociali e dalle condizioni economiche. La Geografia della popolazione, che studia i gruppi umani in relazione al modo in cui essi cambiano nel tempo e nello spazio, può ricoprire nell’ambito degli Studi Umanistici il ruolo di ponte tra le discipline «dure» che si occupano di popolazione, come la statistica, la demografia e l’economia, e quelle umanistiche «classiche», fornendo una chiave di analisi e interpretazione dei fenomeni evolutivi della popolazione rigorosa e corretta, ma inserita in un contesto culturale interdisciplinare.
