Popular French Romanticism written by James Smith Allen and has been published by Syracuse University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981-01-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Focusing on the Paris book world of this period, Allen reveals how the rise of a new popular literature—jolly chansonniers, the roman-feuilletons or serial novels, melodramas, gothic and sentimental novels, dramatic nationalistic histories—by such authors as Dumas, Sand, Lamennais, Ancelot, Desnoyer, and de Kock coincided with remarkable developments in the production, distribution, and consumption of books. Allen's research ranges from a survey of the then-popular romantic titles and authors and the trade catalogs of booksellers and lending libraries, to the police records of their activities, diaries and journals of working people, and military conscript records and ministerial literacy statistics. The result is a remarkable picture of the exchange between elite and popular culture, the interaction between ideas and their material reality, and the relationship between the literature and the history of France in the romantic period.

This collaborative, two-volume work offers a full survey of the French Romantics as a whole, and seeks to reassess their collective achievement and continuing value. The movement they created is considered within the broad terms of intellectual and cultural history as well as of literary criticism. Alongside chapters on the poetry, the novel, the drama and literary theory, there are therefore studies of the religious and political thought, historical writings, art, music and opera that are no less central to a full appreciation of French Romanticism. Volume 1 begins with a discussion of the movement's rise, development and aims, and this is followed by two chapters devoted to different aspects of the Romantics' fundamental intellectual commitment as embodied in their ideas on religion, politics and society. The other two chapters in this volume consider the two central literary genres of poetry and prose fiction.

Excerpt from French Romanticism and the Press the Globe In the history of French Romanticism it contains a wealth of information which, if fully treated, would throw considerable light upon this important subject. The object of this work is to discuss fully the position of the Gloee, which has suffered the fate of all the other journals. The material upon which the work is based will be found in the Globe; all other sources of informa tion are carefully noted. My best thanks are due to Mr E. A. Lewis, Fellow of the University of Wales, for suggestive criticisms on the historical portion of the work. Finally, I have to thank Mr F. H. Brooksbank, Government Secondary School, Alexandria, the Rev. Cecil roberts, Willesden, and my colleague, Mr S. A. Richards, for kindly revising the proofs. Excerpt from The Origins of French Romanticism The bibliography at the end of the book contains acknowledgments of tho works wo have consulted, classified according to tho chapters for which they wore used. It seems fitting, however, to refer gratefully here to the works of three authors to whom we are specially indebted. Our list contains the titles of those articles of Sainte-Beuve which wo are conscious of having directly utilised; but further details here and there have no doubt crept in from the great mass of his work, always so rich in information and suggestion. Readers of the Shakespeare en France sous Vancien Regime of M. Jusserand, and of the Rousseau et le Cosmopolitisms Franqais of M. Texte, will have no difficulty in soeing how much our troatmont of English influences owes to thoso two invaluable works. We also wish to express our thanks to our friend Miss Gardiner for her constant help and encouragement, as well as for the more tangible assistance she gave by writing the pages on Obermann and Adolphe for Chapter V. of Book II.; and to Profossor A. T. Baker, Mr. E. Bullough, and Mr. L. Chouville, w'ho have kindly read parts of the book in manuscript. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
